We wouldn't have been able to do it if I had looked further into it. Ah well.

There was a lot of literature/brochures available at the hospital....yes, I highly recommend it if you are healthy. I am glad I did it.

I'm excited about the idea of donating cord blood. I just think it's amazing to have that opportunity to save another life. I didn't even know about it until I was browsing for info about joining the bone marrow registry and found this: http://marrow.org/Get_Involved/Donate_Cord_Blood/Cord_Blood_is_Changing_Lives/Cord_Blood_Is_Changing_Lives_Today.aspx

We're just going to let the cord pulse and have the blood flow back into the baby. As awesome as cord blood technology is, I really want all those awesome cells back in the baby from the get go.

We doonated it to a public bank and i was very happy with the decision. My OB helped us find the right contact person at the university hospital (not where i delivered). They just gave us several big collection tubes and my doc just filled them from the umbilical cord after it had been cut to LO but before the placenta delivered. Then the contact person picked it up from us the next day. Hope that helps!

and if you know anyone who banked it recently, i think they can send you a referral and you can get a discount. i remember my friends who had their baby 2 months before me sent me one. but i didn't end up keeping it.

i wasn't sure what we were going to do, but i think we'll keep it. with technology and medicine improving each year, who knows what they'll find on what other uses there are for cord blood. but i think i'll stick with the major ones that charge because i don't want to donate. i want to keep my babies' cord bloods.... ugh, there was a $500 off coupon if you used it by 12/31/11. o well.

Did you or will you donate cord blood? I recently found out there are places, like Duke, who collect and store cord blood for free. I'm still researching what goes into collecting the blood but I'm interested so far.
