We delayed cord clamping and weren't able to. We looked into it prior to labor and decided no, so we were ok with it

I will say that I think the current uses of cord blood are pretty limited. I think it's all about future potential uses, about which you could have varying degrees of optimism.

We were told that if you delay clamping that there isn't usually enough blood to store anyways. Besides that it sounds very sketchy to me (and I work in the cell culture field).

We thought about this initially but decided not to because we've heard that despite the enormous cost chances are if your child is ill they can't use his/her own blood. So you're better off donating it to a public cord blood bank, or it's only worth banking privately if you have a close relative who has a condition that might require the use of cord blood.

We did not because we planned to move away from the country where our son was born and there is a law that you can not transport human tissue outside of the country. Weird but true.

We banked with CBR because we are in a financial situation where we can afford to do so, and we felt most comfortable with their processing and storage procedures. However, we were told that you can only do a very slight delay in cord clamping if you intend to donate. My delivery was so rushed that our intended slight delay in clamping became nonexistent, but it worked out better as my daughter had jaundice and delayed cord clamping would have made the jaundice worse than it already was.

No. We did delayed cord clamping and the cost/hassle vs. chances that it would actually be enough or helpful wasn't worth it to us.

We did bank cord blood and tissue with CBR. We figured that we can afford it, so why not. The upfront cost is the biggest; after that it's a small yearly amount. If there is ANY chance that it would help LO or any future LOs, then I happy to have it. If finances were tighter for us though, I don't think we would have done it (or maybe we would have donated).

I think donating would be the way to go if we collected.

Personally I think that at this point in time the private banks are a racket and a waste of money....I mean, if a company is trying to sell me something from an ad in the back of a magazine, I'm generally weary. The AAP recommends against it.

I plan to ask my midwife about this, because we plan to delay cord clamping as well. If there is enough I think I'd like to donate it. I don't personally have an interest in banking it because it is expensive and I've heard that if your child has a genetic problem, often those issues exist also in the cord blood (since they are from the child) so it isn't that useful anyways. In addition, the odds of actually needing to use it are pretty low. But I like the idea of banking because the odds that SOMEONE may need it, and it could be helpful, seem much higher to me. And also, if lots of people donated, then if my kid ever did need it, she could hopefully rely on banked blood.

DH and I are undecided on this issue and would love to hear your experiences. We have discussed with pediatrician and OB team. Delayed cord clamping will be priority, but there is apparently usually enough blood left in the placenta to bank/donate. Banks will refund you if there's not enough collected.

So. We just need to decide if it's worth it.

If you did or didn't, or if you donated, what was your reasoning?
If you did bank, which company did you use? How did you pick?
