@anonysquire: that sounds awful! When you say popcorn...you do mean the puffed kind right? Because popcorn is really unsafe for kids under 6 yrs old. It's one of the biggest choking hazards out there.

Thanks everyone for weighing in. The reactions haven't been all severe but we're going to try and eliminate it all and see how that goes. She's going to freak when she finds out she can't have popcorn!

I am yammering way more than you care to read, but wanted to share that once I removed the most obvious and concentrated sources f corn from my diet, my health related to the allergy improved drastically. Therefore, I have gone corn-lite and not corn-free. Since American foods are so laden with this crap, I think overload is pretty common. Is you LO severely allergic? Perhaps once you eliminate tht main sources, the crazy ones (vaccines, etc.) won't be such a big deal? I don't know what your specific situation is, but that was my personal experience.

I have a corn allergy and lost 15 pounds when I first found out I had it because I didn't know what to eat. Now I eat very healthy because corn, as you have discovered, lurks in the majority of processed foods. It's a cheap filler and makes you learn about the factory farms and the big shot food producers real quick.

I do a lot of rice, including rice cereals (think rice Chex). Watch out for gluten free stuff too, because corn is often the main ingredient. "Natural" is your best bet, but you can never trust a food label that says that--many believe manufactured corn derived sweeteners are natural (key word: manufactured).

Try Pamela's Products. I believe many of their products are corn free.

Edit: My best advice is get familiar with all the tricky corn "names" and read all your ingredient lists. I am now back to the basics (use real butter, cook many convenience items from scratch).

@Applesandbananas: Will definitely check it out! Thank you!

@Mrs. Jacks: After all this time we finally got a script from the GI so we're curious to see how much it'll be. It's supposed to be covered 100% here but we have an out of state plan that specifically doesn't cover formula.

@spaniellove: you should be able to order through your doctor. I have some patients with corn allergies requiring alimentum rtf and we always send then with scripts. Often if it's medical necessity, insurance will pick up part of the cost.

@spaniellove: have you tried going through Amazon for the rtf Alimentum? I had a friend whose LO was on the powder and she never could find enough in store, she ended up doing S&S through amazon.

We've suspected corn allergy because of all the hypoallergenic formulas, LO will only tolerate the one without corn syrup - Alimentum RTF. It's a blast going through a whole container a day and trying to find at least 7 bottles a week on the shelves! The list of meds with corn syrup and derivatives is so discouraging when you look at it.

I have a corn allergy, but it's generally mild. Usually I can eat things with corn in them, as long as it's not the main ingredient (so I avoid corn, popcorn, tortilla chips, etc, but am generally ok with vegetable oil or trace amounts in whatever.) I'm extra careful when I'm pregnant (anaphylactic shock while pregnant seems bad.) I do carry an epi pen, but have never used it. I didn't develop the allergy until my 20s, though (but it's been confirmed by an allergist.) I have a small reaction (little bumps on my mouth) and a major reaction (hives), so if I develop the small reaction, I always stop eating then. I figure if I totally avoid it, I'm more likely to make my allergy worse rather than better (since it's not a severe one.)

Briefly, I thought LO might have a corn allergy (turns out it was just a skin sensitivity to the acid in the tomatoes we were also eating.) It scared the crap out of me. Corn really is in everything. I know I went google-searching for some resources and there were a couple good ones. But yes, baking soda (or powder maybe?), household products, almost all processed food, etc. It can really hide in anything. I'm sorry you are dealing with it!

ME! DD1 has a corn allergy that causes her eczema to flare up terribly. We've been on a corn-free diet for almost 2 years now and let me tell you - corn free products in the US is soooo hard to come by! And to clarify, we only avoid the obvious corn products (corn meal, corn starch, corn syrup, etc.) so we are considered "corn-lite" but I know that there are people who are terribly allergic and need to avoid all corn by-products [this is a whole other world of food since almost everything has corn by-product like manitol and alcohol and citric acid and dextrose]. I find the best luck in shopping at Trader Joe's for corn free items such as snacks, cereal and something as simple as powder sugar for frosting on cakes. We only buy blocks of cheese and grate ourselves for pizza since most grated cheese bags have cornstarch to prevent clumping

Does your LO have to go corn-free or is corn-lite ok? What is her reaction to corn? I joined the FB group Corn Allergy & Intolerance (Maize, Zea Mays) and found them very helpful. Most members are corn-free but it's a great place to go if you want help on where to get corn-free products. They also share when they find new corn-free or corn-lite products.

EDIT: Also check out this website - http://www.cornallergens.com/list/corn-allergen-list.php.

I know someone with a corn allergy but don't have any first hand experience. He found that buying organic versions of things was often helpful when trying to avoid "hidden" corn since there is very little non GMO corn left and organic food cannot contain GMOs. Trader Joe's sources only non-GMO ingredients for their house brand so they might be a good place to try if you have one nearby (the non organic meat might have been fed gmo food though which could include corn.)

Good luck!

Anyone else with a LO with a corn allergy? I'm finding that the list of foods without corn in them is so much shorter than the one with corn or corn products in them. Even some vaccines, dish soap and baby soap have corn. Wth?

Anyways, wondering how other people have managed this? I guess I also need to go off corn since I'm still nursing. Any non-corny support groups?
