I will say I have never taken either of my children to bed with me but I wouldn't judge what works for other parents. :) We all get so many judgments all day so why add another? We like our bed to be our bed ;) so we try to keep the kids out haha

Seriously. People need to get over it and keep their opinions to themselves. -.-
Co-sleeping FTW :P :)

@regberadaisy: Yeah it really is recent. I'm not sure why either.
I would assume the "studies" they do to come up with their statistics are only in the US. I would say a LARGE population of the world cosleeps or exercises a family bed setup. And it's been done all across for the world since the beginning of time.

@Mrs. Jacks: I agree about it being better if you do it right. I do wish doctors/media did take more time to explain that it's not a poor choice. It's a personal choice. If they focused more on educating safe sleeping habits as opposed to trying to scare parents, I think it would help the situation a lot.

@Mrsdaredevil: I hate that it's become a taboo subject really. Like breastfeeding - why do we see these things as so awkward or unnatural? A parent should feel the freedom to parent how they feel is best for them and their family.

It doesn't bother me so much; we do a lot of things that aren't acceptable by mainstream views, but it's what works for our family. I find the people who are most judgey about co-sleeping either a) are uniformed about the safety issues or b) have vastly different parenting views from our family.

@Mrs. Jacks: Agreed. The media does not hold the attention span of their audience long enough to explain something complex.

@miss-spunkin: you know, I really want to know where all this hype of anti-co-sleeping came from? I feel like it has not been a big thing until recent years?
I honestly did not know it was such a big debate until TTC.

I grew up in a culture where co-sleeping is VERY common. So where are all these statistics that people are drawing coming from? Just the US? North America? What about the rest of the world??

I have a blog post on sensible co-sleeping and it explains a little bit why doctors are so judgy about the issue. FWIW if you are co-sleeping and breast feeding and no one in the bed is impaired, there is actually some evidence out there to say it's protective to co-sleep! No one ever says that in the media, because it's too complicated of a story to tell!

It annoys me too. I cosleep (for 4 more weeks, when I'm off work for the summer and will transition her) and I do it because I wake up at 5:30am to go to work at 7, SO at 4am.

The ad with the baby in the bed with the knife is the worst one for me. Those who cosleep and researched know not to put a baby on fluffy blankets and pillows...you aren't supposed to do it in a crib either,SIDS.

Huh. All the articles I've seen are super anti-cosleeping, too. It's really frustrating not being able to see both sides.

It's interesting that you say this because I was just thinking that almost every media form I see right now is pro co-sleeping. Every single parenting magazine I get in the mail has at least one article that encourages co-sleeping, and it seems to be encouraged in every baby book I have too. I guess the jury is still out--I have noticed it's kind of a controversial subject!

@bluestriped bee: I think that is what irks me the most. Please don't give parents grief for doing what they feel is best (and most of the time IS what's best for them and their kids).

I read this article while working out this morning in Redbook magazine, honestly it made me mad. I hate how judgmental writers and doctors are about cosleeping. EVERY parent I know readily admits to taking their child into bed with them at LEAST once in order to get some sleep. It's a well-known fact that every child sleeps best with their parents, why wouldn't they?! :) But doctors are dead-set on telling us the dangers of cosleeping when in reality, the majority of cases where death occurred as a result was actually because the parents had been drinking, using drugs (including any type of medication, or over the counter drgus) or obese .
But this article addresses older children sleeping with their parents, and they say it's still unsafe, which I don't understand - since a parents bed would be the same as their bed.

Also, if my child had night terrors like the son in the article, I definitely wouldn't turn him away. But I feel like this article makes these parents out to be the bad guys. And I totally don't believe the supposed studies saying that cosleeping children are behind academically.

I am not necessarily for/against cosleeping, but moreso the mindset that wherever BOTH parents/children sleep BEST is the best place for them. If that's together, then great, if it's separate - that's awesome. But I'm soo tired of seeing media judge parents for them doing what WORKS for them.

Thoughts?

(PS I LOVE the idea of a 9 foot custom bed like the Pitts!!)
