Nannies in my area start at $12/hr for one child. That's too expensive for us. Our daycare comes out to about $30/day but it is 9-3 (more of a Mom's Day Out/preschool).

Like @sooz I live in the bay area as well and I am just mind boggled by how inexpensive childcare is for some of you! I'm currently pregnant and just started the hunt for childcare, and the going rate for a nanny out here is *at least* $15 an hour, and most in-home daycares are around $90 a day. This is for one child.

Thanks everyone! We are in a more rural area and I had heard of most people around here paying someone in home $25-30ish. We looked into someone before who charged $20 per kid and provided breakfast & lunch but I wasn't sold on the setting. Now we just talked to someone who would charge $80 total for the day with both kids. I know she needs to make money for the day too but I don't get paid much that only profiting $20 for the day after paying her doesn't really make sense to me at this point. Ugh, trying to figure out our options. Thanks for your input! I know we are lucky to be in a more affordable area to begin with!

Wow! I just read through the replies and I feel like I'm paying an arm and a leg. I live in the SF Bay Area and I pay $21/hr for two kids and I would say that's about the going average rate. For one child, we paid $16/hr.

Our nanny takes care of the kids at our home 3 days per week/10 hours per day, so that adds up to $210 per day, but we also provide sick days, vacation days, and holidays and regular cash bonuses.

Before DD started daycare, I was paying between €10-12/hour. I had two different part time babysitters who would watch DD anywhere from 3-5 hours per day. I would only be comfortable with someone babysitting in my home (unless it was some sort of approved in-home daycare). If it's just infrequent sitting, I would pay hourly. If you need someone several times per week, I would probably do a day rate.
