@Mrs D: I got 'mostly' my dream kitchen out of that... hoping to upgrade the counters someday and we still need new appliances.
Hopefully your neighbors give you a tour, that would be perfect to see the 'finished' product before you even start. ;)

@hellobeeboston: Agreed!! Love them!
@T.H.O.U.: OMG we have sooo much work to do yet too. Finish the basement, upstairs bathroom complete re-do. This is why I need Fixer Upper to do it all for me... for free would be good. :)

@hellobeeboston: I would die...even just to have them consult on my project...happy dance!!! If we do ever do this major reno I will be hiring an interior decorator to assist. I priced that out last year and really you dont end up paying much if anything bc they get their money from the wholesalers/subs!

@T.H.O.U.: I hear you...we basically took this house down to studs on the first floor and cosmetically re-did the second floor. In hindsight we wish we would have spent just a little more in the master to get what we really wanted...now we will need to gut it and basically start over.

As for windows...we have found a great company locally that always offers 0% interest for X years - depending on what you spend. We pay it off a little quicker usually. But we did the second floor when we first moved in and just about have it paid off...next up will be the first floor...easier to stomach at about $125-150/month than $5K lump sum!

@Mrs D: Yes, thats my other big issue, even if we do an addition, we still have a master bath gut job and a kitchen reno that needs to be done. Oh and new windows needed throughout the house. So even the addition wont totally "fix" our house.

@hellobeeboston: But the big question is...which HGTV star would you pick?!!?! (totally off subject)

@josina: Wow that is a great deal for all that work! We plan to ask the neighbors once theirs is done if we can see it - just unfortunately they are not neighbors we have been social with! They literally did what we have been talking about...my concern is that the work is still going on...it started in July!!!!

Our project would depend on cost...we would limit it to only a crawl space to save on cost...but this would be the last big house thing we would do - so I would want my "dream" (within reason) kitchen which I know will add significantly to cost...

@Mrs D: Ours was right around $80k and I think that is on the way cheap end as the contractor was a former employer and my DH did a lot of finish work himself. I think the higher quotes were around $120? (we're in Iowa)

We did a 30 x 20 addition, with a garage on the bottom attached to our walk-out basement and kitchen above. We did all new windows, siding, roof on the whole house, and a deck.
And because we used the cheapest contractor, a 3 month job took 6 months, but we were on a tight budget.
@hellobeeboston: lol, can I please have Fixer Upper come finish my house! Love them! ;)

I'm soooo curious about this too. We want to put a pretty big addition on our house in the next 3-5 years. Ideally a 2-car garage and mudroom on main level and add another room upstairs and another bathroom. Basic addition would just be 2-car garage & mudroom, it would really depend on the cost, I'm sure the bathroom with all of the plumbing would add a TON. I wish HGTV would come to my house and do it!

@T.H.O.U.: Ask around to find a couple contractors - preferably ones that come well reviewed. You can also look to Angies list for reviews...I have had some good luck there. We have unfortunately seen the best and worst from contractors...so make sure you get a few quotes and have a solid contractor.

@josina: Any chance you'd be willing to share the cost? DH and I have been eyeballing an addition our neighbors are doing (adding a 3rd car garage - they have 2 already - and bumping out the back wall of their house about 16' for a 30' distance - so adding about 450-500 sq ft. They have our exact house so we are so intrigued to see how it is at the end and it makes us wonder.

We had inquired with our previous contractor (who we can no longer use) and he indicated that a garage on a slab would be about $15K...and estimated another $60-80K for the expansion depending on the finishings...

@T.H.O.U.: You would need to get some quotes from local contractors first; that shouldn't cost anything.
We put a kitchen/garage addition on our house last year and got quotes from 4 different contractors.
If you have any friends/family/neighbors in the area that have done remodeling/additions, that'd be a good place to start.

Bump - How do you go about figuring out costs for an addition? Who do you call/contact first and does that cost money up front?

I dont even know what our options would be with our house. We have a sunroom that could possibly be modified (450 sq ft), we could covert the garage and build a separate detached garage, or look at going up. I can't even picture the options so I dont know how to guess at cost.

I've priced something similar (converting an enclosed sun room into a living room) with no plumbing, but yes to adding hardwood floors and it came out to $60K. So that was a no go (I am in the DC area if that helps).

@travellingbee: we currently working with a contractor to do just this. Kinda. We are transforming our enclosed back porch into a new living room, and we were quoted about 16k. This doesn't include painting or flooring, though. My husband is going to purchase and paint to save a little money. And we need to pick and purchase the flooring we want the contractor to install for us.

DH totally vetoed getting an addition on our old house. I think it came out to about $500 per sq ft.

I agree that it depends where you are too.

It really depends on where you are. If you're in a warm climate you won't need foundation and excavation which is the most expensive part of an addition.
You can ball park about $200 per for for a reno, but adding a basement and roof will add to that cost.

We have been considering adding on to our home. It would be fairly small as we would like only one extra room. We are happy with the square footage but we'd like one extra bedroom. We wouldn't be adding on any plumbing (no bathrooms or kitchens etc) so I am thinking it wouldn't be too much but I am just not sure. I'm thinking that we'd be adding 150-175 square feet. I know it varies by area, but have any of you bees done any recent additions and have any thoughts on a price range of a simple addition? Are we talking 30K? 50K? 100K?
