I've been pretty happy with our insurance plan because the times we've had to go through the ER (for my husband's appendectomy and for my labor and delivery), that's been our only fee for all necessary procedures/hospital stays. Last year the co-pay was $100 and now it's $400. The system is not perfect, but when you need it, it is there. In the fall I ended up in emergency surgery, had an ambulance transfer to a different hospital (note: had I called from my house, the out of pocket cost for that would have been $45 in Ontario), and spent two nights in the hospital in a private room. My cost was nothing...they even waived the (otherwise ridiculous) daily parking lot rates for us. I can completely see how people practically get scammed into billing for this, billing for that. </p> <p>After DD's delivery I HAD to have an ambulance transport me to the hospital (less than 3 miles away). I can't remember the original bill but it was over $2500 and the ambulance was out of network!!! Like I had a choice. Had blood work done, urine test, IV fluids, and sent home some zofran. $1400 after insurance.</p> <p>I just went to the ER about a month ago. It was the first time I'd ever been in a hospital besides when I was pregnant. I was puking and having excruciating stomach pain. The ER staff helped me out so much. But I got IV fluids, a CT scan, zofran, morphine, and two other drugs. Also an EKG because my heart rate was really high. I was there for about 4 hours. Have them talk to a financial counselor at the hospital to help figure out how to get it done. Some turned into admissions and some were strictly ER. Luckily everything is covered between our two insurances. I got a bill from the ambulance/helicopter ($7k) but I got them to include it in the copay thank goodness. </p>
