The kindergarten tuition is WAY cheaper than private daycare. But, then again, we could keep him at our daycare (they have a private kindergarten), skip public school K, and go straight to first. </p> <p>It seems like daycare generally ends up being the amount of a 2nd mortgage for whatever area you live in! As F gets older, his tuition is less. That's like having a second mortgage payment and it's nearly 3/4 of one of my paychecks. Sometimes I wonder if it's even worth it for me to continue to work. And there are long waiting lists for those, most are well over $3K. I think that is absolutely insane. And the government does nothing to subsidize the cost, just keeps taxing us at the usual 40% rate since we're both working. They are also into giving discounts if you pay early and for an extended period of time. We paid for 6 months in June and were given a 20% discount! It really made a huge difference. Childcare costs aren't forever. The cost is worth the reward so to speak and it's a blessing to have child(ren) that cause the expense! DS was born in NYC and the cost of daycare was beyond outrageous, so I became a SAHM/WAHM. It was just not worth it for me to go back.</p> <p>Now where we live in Austria the daycare is heavily subsidized (hello high taxes!) and we pay the equivalent of about $200/month for half days with food included. When he starts full time in the fall it will be about $300/month.
