I have been doing it this way for about ten years and saw it climb up past $40. I go back and forth between two reliable providers every few years to negotiate and get the best introductory rate. My introductory rate wore off six months ago and it shot up to $70 so I moved. The company now offers intro is as low as 50mbps for $24.99 for a month for one year. They used to have eight different levels to choose from. Now there are only about four. We are currently looking into cutting the cable cord, so I recently looked into internet-only packages in my area (quasi-rural mountain town in Colorado). Right now we have a bundle cable/internet/landline through Comcast which is $212/mo (absurd, but we had a much more favorable monthly bill the first year of our contract). If we downgrade our Comcast service to high-speed internet only (150 mbps), it would be $95/mo.
