We opted for a shared IVF program that includes retrieval and up to 6 transfers. Anywhere along the line, or at the end of 6, if we want to quit or aren't pregnant, we get a $16K refund. Total cost is ~$23K.

Also, I had a friend who did IVF. Apparently Avon (and some other women-focused companies) pays for 3 rounds of IVF. This was huge for her. She hated the job, but it was worth it to her to get the IVF. She had twins.

Had we not had insurance coverage, our IVF cycle would have been about $18k for the doc/procedures and probably at least $5k for meds (through Freedom Fertility). Because we had insurance that covered 80% infertility treatments, plus a few things that were not covered at all, we spent about $6k total for meds, doc visits, procedures, and two years of embryo storage for our for remaining embryos.

I'm in SoCal and I paid the following for an IVF w/ fresh transfer:
$8,500 for "plan fee" monitoring, retrieval and fresh transfer
$360 for anesthesia
$1,200 for icsi
$550 for assisted hatching
$4,361.42 for meds (but I just received a $559.20 rebate!)
(I negotiated a $1,000 discount off of this total, which specifically came off the plan fee and the icsi charges)

Additional costs:
$104.19 for pre-IVF testing
$141.49 for HSS
(my no-IF insurance oddly covered some of these two costs)

Also:
$900 for three years storage of frozen embryos
(I haven't incurred this yet and it will be pro-rated when I take the embryos out of storage early. I only have two embryos I plan to use them quickly.)

IUIs:
#1 - $1574.54 plus $624 for meds. (I think I negotiated a $500 discount that's reflected in the price I paid)
#2 - $1824.54 plus $354 for meds.

I needed two ultrasounds/blood work in between those two IUIs that were $171.60 and $104.19 (probably covered a bit by insurance)

I'm in Toronto and I paid about $12,000 plus meds (about another $8000, I think, but I'm a low responder who was on a HIGH dose of Gonal-f). My health plan covered 80% of the meds, but none of the IVF.

I also used a more expensive clinic - my first round at a different clinic was closer to $9,000 plus meds. Both included ICSI, neither included freezing.

$450 for anesthesia
$1350 for ICSI
$1400 for embryo freezing and 1 year of storage (if we make it there)

For the round I did in NYC with no insurance, it was around 13k including meds and with no ICSI. The round I did with insurance coverage cost the insurance company about 8k. There is a lot of competition in NYC, which I think may surprisingly keep the costs down.

As @momazon mentioned, the pre-ivf stuff was until we met our deductible and then co-pay. A round costs $28k at our clinic and we do have insurance that pays 80%. We're coming right in at $5700 for ivf, meds, icsi, and 2 years of freezing. If we don't have any embryos to freeze, it will only be $4450. However, this is a one and done deal. If I have to go through it again, all out of pocket.

A single cycle at my clinic is 11,000 (including ICSI). Meds are on top of that, ranging from 3500-5500-ish per cycle depending on dosage and what extra meds you're on.

My clinic also has multi-cycle plans and shared risk plans, which can help minimize the costs if you need to do more than one cycle. We purchased the Shared Risk plan, which gave 6 fresh cycles and any subsequent FET for a flat fee of 22k (before meds). The 22k is refunded if you don't have a live baby.

Screening tests and pre-IVF tests, such as all the consultations, bloodwork, HSG, mock transfer, etc. are charged on top of the other fees.

We paid for everything out of pocket, as infertility is excluded on my insurance.

@NorthStar: Oh, yeah, that might be tricky. I don't think you could pay a loan off with HSA. I think you'd have to try work it out with the clinic to take payment directly for what you can pay with HSA, and then work out the financing for the remainder.

@twodoghouse: you can deduct any medical expenses over 10% of your household income. We did last year but unfortunately couldnt deduct all of it because I made too much money last year. I was off my $8k. I sold stock to pay for our expenses. I should have contacted a accountant earlier. They probably could have warned me about that income cap.

@PurplePumps: yeah, maybe that isn't standard, so I just need to do some research to see if I can find better rates, or like you said a 0% credit card. We are hoping we don't get to IVF, but I would like to be prepared.

As far as HSA/FSA, my concern with paying for something financed, is that a portion could be paying for interest, which wouldn't be an allowable item.

@NorthStar: Wow, I thought the rates might be better, but that's not any better than credit card rates! I'd look into credit card with 0% balance transfers if that were the case. Oh yes, definitely. You can use HSA or FSA to help pay for it. I didn't choose an HSA (I knew my first round would just be a $40 copay on a traditional plan), but I've used my FSA funds to pay for meds and will use the rest of my FSA for my next round in June.

I'm really shocked by these cost! We're close to Boston, so I thought it would be higher than others since COL is higher here. Maybe it's because there are so many hospitals and options that competition keeps it lower?

Ours was about $18K which included the cost of meds. I ended up having to use a higher dose of meds for a longer period of time so the cost of my meds were much higher. We also did ICSI which added to the cost. Freezing and PGD are also added costs if you decide to use those options. None of it was covered under insurance.

Ours ended up around $18,500 including meds, ICSI, and freezing our leftover embryo. A few things were covered by insurance if they had other uses other than infertility meds and could be coded as such. Other than that it was all out of pocket. I live in a small town and my sister, who did IVF in Chicago, paid a lot more. I'm a fast responder for meds so I got away easy without having to reorder much.

@mrbee: You may want to remind your friend about medical tax deductions. There are requirements (medical costs must be over a certain % of your income, which may be hard with NYC cost of living/wages) but if the IVF # is high enough, they may qualify for it.

$7,900 cash price at my clinic plus 2-3k in meds per cycle. I have insurance coverage with a lifetime max of only 7500, which is pretty much wiped out after 1 round. Insurance has processed the claim and reduced it to 6k/round, but my office is supposedly trying to fight that saying their negotiated rate was 9k. Meds with insurance was about $350, also with a lifetime max that is reached after just 1 round.

The cost numbers he mentioned sounded a little high to me though, so I thought I'd do some research. While I do that, thought it might be helpful for my friend to gather some more data points if anyone is willing to share!

What was the cost of IVF for you? Was any of the total cost covered by insurance?
