@T.H.O.U.: I'm putting together some backpacks to donate to the elementary school next door. I was sort of guessing on the supply lists but I bought a ton of stuff from amazon basics. The quality looks good. I even bought the amazon basics backpacks and they look good! I did buy some name brand stuff (ticonderoga pencils) but anything I could buy from Basics I did.

@Mamaof2: that would drive me insane, having to go to multiple places!

This year I happened to be at Walmart and got some of the stuff, and I'll complete it via another trip to Walmart for the household supplies. Or amazon, lol.

Our Kinder (public school) list requires we bring NOTHING. They have a very short list of classroom optional donations (wipes, stickey notes and 3 other things I can't remember right now).

I haven't added it all up and we don't have everything yet, but we have to buy all pens, pencils, markers, rulers, glue, backpack and pencil case, all pretty basic stuff and I think that will be between €30-40. The school buys all the paper goods so that all the kids have the same thing and then they bill us. The cost for that is supposed to be €50 or less for the whole year. I think it's reasonable. Our kids don't pool supplies as we are supposed to put their name on every item and one of the goals is that the kids are responsible for and keep track of their own stuff.

Has anyone tried the Amazon Basic brand for supplies? I ordered the dry erase markers from there because they didn't specify brand and I figured they would probably be ok.

DS is in 2nd grade and his list is MUCH longer - too much for me to add up but I purposely chose some more expensive items - for example - last year he had a flimsy plastic folder that managed to get ripped so this year instead of paying 60 cents each I bought the heavy duty ones for $2.50 each.

I also buy erasers and pencils in bulk -ha! So I had lots left over from last year and didn't have to buy those this year for him

It can vary so much!

Kindergarten, public school:

2 boxes 8 count crayola crayons: 87 cents each
1 box of markers: 10 count 1.97
1 package expo black dry erase markers: 4 count 4.97
1 box colored pencils: 8 count, around $2
4 primary beginner pencils with eraser: 3.49
1 pink block eraser: 3 pack, 3.97
1 book bag: not counting
1 bottle Elmers glue: 1.97
4 large glue sticks: 3 pack, 4.97
1 plastic supply box: 7
1 roll paper towels: will send from a family pack, $1
1 bottle hand sanitizer: $3
2 containers clorox wipes: $7...price changed here, i thought they were cheaper, lol
2 packages baby wipes: 3.00
1 box tissues: 1.00

I hadn't totalled it before, but it comes to over $40. I suppose I could shop around a little more, i think i overspent on the pencil box.

My issue is sending my son to school with 4 glue sticks when they're supposed to last the whole year. I will send one at a time, because my son will open them all and they'll all be garbage by November. Besides, if each kid brings 4 glue sticks, that's 80. As far as I know, they're not pooled as we also need to label each item.

Kindergarten - Public School

2 boxes of 24 count crayons (Crayola) - $1
1 box of broad tip markers (Crayola) - $1
1 box of dry erase markers - $5
2 4 oz. bottles of Elmer's school glue $1
4 Elmer’s school glue sticks $1
10-12 sharpened #2 yellow pencils - $1
1 pair of Fiskars blunt tip scissors - $3
1 folder with pockets, no plastic folders - $1
1 package of multi-colored construction paper - $5
1 Container of Clorox disinfecting wipes - $3

So total = about $25? I guess when we get our teacher assignment we may need a few more things? I dont count backpack/lunchbox as school supplies. They just asked for a beach towel as a rest mat.

Anyone care to share your supply list, grade and what your estimated cost will be?

I have been seeing tons of blog posts lately about either parents that are outraged by the extreme cost of supplies (that all get dumped into a community pot for the class) or teachers expressing the extreme cost of supplies they purchase.
