We have 2 electric vehicles, but we only really charge the Nissan Leaf using it. To get a full charge, which is 90 miles, it takes overnight. We do it that way because the electricity cost is less.

I think we paid something like $1200 for the charging station and my dad installed it for free...but he's an electrical engineer. I think realistically it should take an electrician about a 2 hours worth of work.

Sorry, my point being with that last post - if you're comfortable with the price, the gas version has an 8 seat version and either way it's a great car.

@HappyBaker: Well, we really loved the Pacifica in general. The non-hybrid with the other features we wanted seemed higher than we wanted to spend (because no phev rebates) but definitely an amazing minivan. It's beautiful inside and out and DH loves driving it. He never thought he'd want a minivan, but when he found out about all the features it has (we're very techie), he decided to check it out and loved it. He didn't even test drive the electric one because it wasn't available, he drove the gas engine and he was sold.

@ShootingStar: Awesome that is SO great to hear! There aren't a lot of real consumer reviews yet since its so new! My commute is only 30 miles round trip so it would be perfect for us. I'm torn between wanting an 8th seat though since we are going to drive this van into the ground and might need more seating in the future! Thanks for the feedback!

@HappyBaker: LOVE it! It's actually DH's car, but it's amazing. It has like every single bell and whistle. And so much space. There are so many cool features, especially for the kids. Like built in window shades and the built in screens. There's only a couple small drawbacks which we decided we could live with.

There's no stow n go seats, because that's where the battery goes. We figured that's not a big need for us, but if you need to get in the back a lot, it's not super easy with car seats on each of the captain's chairs. Our car seats are really easy to install, so we just move them if we need to use the third row for seating. There's also no power 3rd row fold, which is on the non-hybrid model. I would've liked it, but again it's not a big deal.

@ShootingStar: Thanks so much! The Pacifica Hybrid is actually what I'm interested in, how do you like yours?

We've had two PHEVs. We installed a level 2 charger about 3 years ago. With DH's Leaf, we really needed it. Now, with the Pacifica hybrid it has a much smaller battery so I think we could get away without it, it would just take all night.

Our charger was about $500 and the installation was about $600. DH thought the installation/electrician overcharged though. All they really needed to do was pop in a couple circuits to our panel and run some cable about 20 feet. DH didn't get a real estimate the guy just said "oh this should be simple" but then it took half a day with 2 guys working on it. There are also federal and state rebates for them now, around 30%.

ETA: We do have a garage, but you don't need one. Most chargers are interior/exterior.

We are seriously considering a plug in hybrid for our next car, but I'm wondering if anyone has gotten a Level 2 / fast charger installed at their house and how much it cost both to buy and have installed?

Also if you have an EV or a PHEV, do you have a garage? We don't, I'm not sure if that would be a big deal break or not!
