At 12 months DS was moved to a room of 12-14 month olds (due to state regs they were too young for the toddler room) and they all slept on cots. I have no idea how they did it.

@SteelerGirl: Similarly - my DD and DS slept longer when they moved to cots! I think a big benefit is the teachers could rub their backs whereas in the crib they could rock it a bit - but couldn't rub their backs every day for all the babies in cribs (their backs would break!)

We transitioned at about 10 months to cots.

@MamaG: She's 9 months now and she is scooting but not crawling. We'll be starting the daycare in about 2 months so who knows what she'll be doing then. Two months is a lot of time when you are that small. However, they don't seem to be tying her development to her room assignment.

My younger started on a cot at about 10.5 months. She was walking at that point though. I'm a little surprised if your kiddo isn't crawling that they would use a cot. In our daycare cots are used for kids that are in the toddler room, which means they are walking and off bottles.

My older moved to this room (and a cot) when she was about 15 months. Again, she walked about 13 months so she had been walking and moved from bottles completely before the cot transition.

I'm not sure if ours transitioned at 11 months or waited until 12 months but it was somewhere around there. I guess I was a little surprised since we were so far from transitioning her to a bed at home, but it works out fine at daycare. Honestly I figured if she had trouble sleeping, it would be their problem and they would handle it. Worked out fine.

@Shantuck: In our room, they switched them to cots when the last baby turned 12 months. So for us, DS was 15 months and it was totally fine. The youngest baby though (obviously) was 12 months and she did fine too!

My daughter just started sleeping on a mat on the floor two weeks ago at 11.5 months. I was concerned, especially because her naps weren't all that great at daycare, even in a crib. But they actually lengthened when she moved to the floor! I would love to peek in one day to see how they do it! I think if I tried putting her down on the floor she would just stand up and follow me to the door!

My kids also transitioned to a cot at 12 months at school, and it was completely fine... and of course they were still in cribs at home. I think the difference is that during the night, a crib kept them safe because I was also sleeping and couldn't be there to watch them. At school, there are teachers in the room who will sit next to the children and rub backs if needed. The cots are about 3" off the ground and children typically don't roll off... and if they do, it is WAY less dramatic than falling out of a crib that's several FEET off the ground.

DD was switched to a mat when she moved to the toddler room at 12 or 13 months. She still sleeps in a crib at home but does great on the mat at daycare. I don’t know how they get her to sleep on it but she takes longer naps there.

Both of my daughters started on a cot at 11 months and did fine. They were both still in cribs at home, too. She will probably surprise you!

Every daycare I looked at transitions kids to cots at 1 year, when they move up to the toddler room. That said, they often practice napping on cots a few weeks before that, so 11 months doesn't seem unreasonable to me at all.
It works out great. (And of course, they still sleep in cribs at home - its just a special school thing.)

Our state law is that they stay in a crib until their first birthday. But immediately after that they move to a floor mat. Daycare did a great job getting her to lay down and take a nice long nap.

My son transitioned to a cot at daycare at 12 months old and I was nervous about it since he wasn't crawling and was still exclusively in a crib, but he did really well! I anticipated a lot of trouble with him sleeping but he was fine. Can you have a trial run day and see how she does?

My daughter will be starting daycare in a couple months when she is 11 months old. When I visited the center to fill out all the paperwork, I discovered that they have all of the 11-15 month old children in the room sleeping on cots. We're still a month and a half away but as of now my daughter isn't even crawling yet (and sleeps exclusively in a crib at home) so the thought of placing her on a cot at 11 months of age seems very early. My older child attended a different daycare several years ago and transitioned to a cot at 15 months (and I remember thinking that was way too early!). Just curious if any others have made such an early transition and if so, how did it turn out?
