I see you are in the Chicago area. :). We bought a sectional with a chaise on one end for our basement early in the year from Walter E Smithe. We ended up getting a cancelled order from their clearance center and could still use the $500 off friends and family coupon. It ended up being only $1600 or so and is far more comfortable that our upstairs sectional that was over $6K! Their F&F sale is going on now and I think you can print the coupon from the website.

Pic of the one we have.

@Ajsmommy: Good to know on the fill! And I was toying around with buying another seat and using it as an ottoman with the "u" thing but think we'd wait on that.

@Madison43: Sounds like a perfect solution! I love old houses but they definitely have some challenges.

I went "cheap" and got a pull out sleeper from Ashley for the basement. It gets sat on a few times a week and we've had overnight guests on it and have it it for 5+ years and I think it will last! I don't care of it gets destroyed later on in life.

@Mommy Finger: @Ajsmommy: thanks to you both for this thread! We are also doing a basement remodel and have been searching for the perfect couch. We have the CB Lounge and while I like it, I don’t love it as much as a thought I would and given we live in a 100 year old house with narrow stairs, it was an absolute beast to move in (spoiler alert: it had to be cut in half and then reassembled) so I’ve been extremely stressed about getting decent furniture to even fit down the basement stairs. This seems like a great solution!

@Mommy Finger: we actually got the standard and it's great!!

We considered buying 2-3 cushions with the lovesoft and just positioning them where we would sit but we decided with a 4 yo and 1 yo that we'd go with the standard to start. It's been just fine.

I will say we bought the "u" thing to use as a coffee table and it's a waste! we never use it!! also we got two cup holder things and they never get used either! the back is flat so I usually just set my cup there..... so I'd say to not buy those things.

@Ajsmommy: What fill did you get in the cushions? The standard, down or lovesoft? I think I got DH comfortable with the cost but just with the standard fill. Not sure how he'll feel when he see the price jump if we like the down or lovesoft fill better.

@Mommy Finger: I'll admit when DH first suggested lovesac I though it was cray cray to spend so much on a couch.... but then he showed me how you can reconfigure it and how the covers can be removed to wash or removed to be replaced and how you can pick the cushions and everything else. I was sold. And I haven't regretted it ONCE. The couch is amazing. I literally fall asleep every time if I lay on it it's so comfy!

I voted more expensive/quality.... we purchased a love sac (@codeitall: ) sectional two years ago. It was the most expensive couch I've ever purchased however it is AMAZING. We have a 4.5 yo and an 18 mos old who jump from the arms onto the cushions nightly and we also tend to have picnics on the cushions and this thing is holding up GREAT! The fabric is easy to clean and I can't recommend it enough. It's a lot to spend up front but it 100% can stand up to the wear.

We got a modular sectional leather sofa from Macy's about 6 years ago, maybe 7, and it's in our 'playroom' and it's held up GREAT... it was maybe only around $2k or less, and it was great because it could be re-arranged into different shapes and click tightly together, and it also could fit into our houses other basement at the time that only had one narrow entry... i would check there. The leather is tough and not too delicate so it doesn't scratch easily at all... and we have a cat too!

If it is going to be for kids, might I suggest looking for used? I am much less worried about the kid's ruining the couches because I know I can easily replace it.

It also depends on the ages of your kids. When my kids are over the age of 8, I'll start looking into quality furniture and pass on our well-loved furniture to another young family to destroy ;)

ETA:
I've got my eye on these modular couches from lovesac for our future quality couches and they're in your price range:

@PurplePumps: @Lahela017: Trust me, I hear what you're saying. And yes, I was being crazy conservative in my price ranges above. The issue I'm having is that the style that I want isn't your standard set up so it would be custom regardless. Even the same style at Ikea is almost $2k. We need a big couch, not a standard size which is why it's more expensive

And I was just worried that the cheaper end would just be the foam cushions that tend to wear out quickly. I might be jaded but I bought one of the cheaper ones for about $1k from a Bob's type place and that thing was trashed within a few years and that's when I lived alone in my 20's.

@Mommy Finger: The sale wasn't any better than the 15% coupons that come via email, so that is why I didn't buy it. I am holding out for a better coupon (which may never happen) or at least until we have the funds to buy it. Good luck!

@NorthStar: @gestalt: That's the exact couch I was looking at except with a chaise at each end. :) And yes, I was so sad to see that the sale ended yesterday. I couldn't mobilize DH fast enough. However, we're not in a hurry so we can wait for a sale. I think the one I wanted was about $3.5k total so I was being very conservative in my numbers in my original post.

I'm in the midwest, so pricing might vary from wherever you are. But our basement is set up pretty similar to what you described and we bought a leather sectional with 2 recliners and a chaise on the end for about $2,200 and it has held up great against a toddler, 85 lb labrador, and everyday use. I would consider out couch a higher midrange pricing.

Our basement is very similar to what you described and I'm planning on buying a CB Lounge II couch with a chaise on one end. Their sale had it for $2,500 (and the sale ended yesterday!), but they frequently email out 15% off coupons and that would bring the price down to that amount. From what I read, it's a great couch and has many positive reviews.

Well, my scale of cheaper would be like Bobs at a few hundred to 1000 something, and "nicer" at your low end of 2-2.5k.... I can't fathom spending upwards of 5k for a couch. Granted we don't have kids yet jumping on them daily yet, but both our sets were around 2k and have held up for 5+ years. My vote goes for your "cheaper" cause I think there are certainly quality couches that can take a beating and last in that price range.

We just put a lot of money into redoing our basement and now need to furnish it. The basement consists of a family/tv room, laundry, half bath, toy room and unfinished storage. The thought is that we would all use the tv room as a family for years to come and this would be where we'd send the kids and their friends when they come over to play.

The tv room is long and somewhat narrow so we wanted a long sectional that has a chaise at either end. The question we're debating now is whether we buy a quality couch intending it to last a long time or do we go with something cheaper thinking the boys and their friends will destroy it. Our current family room has a couch from C&B that has held up really well over the past 5 years and we've put that thing through hell. I'm wondering if we cheap out now does it really cost us more in the end if we'd have to replace it sooner.

Curious to know other's thoughts. For context, we're talking about maybe a $2k-$2.5k on the low end vs $4k-$4.5k on the high end.
