@Smurfette: Oh it goes away then it's different! Plus, it is flu season so it's not uncommon for kids to get runny noses all the time. I keep a dirty tissue bucket permanently on the side table in the living room b/c every time I put it away someone gets sick again. LOL! I was getting tired of running to the trash can with a tissue every so many minutes. I think we're almost over the sickness hump...three months. Blech!

@erwoo: Thanks! I thought about allergies but her whole class has a runny nose as well. It gets better and then comes back, same cycle for 2-3 months now. Hoping it is going to stop once it warms up.

@Smurfette: Not to alarm you but I thought I would share. My oldest had a runny hose and was always stuffy for 6 months straight after I had my second and I finally took him to get tested again and it turns out he has grass, tree, dust mite, and dog allergies! He was taking claritin/zyrtec every day but since we moved he's been okay. Occasionally, I have to give him some meds, but maybe the new air in a different country has helped? I hope! I suspect my youngest also has allergies besides peanut and dog. :\ Allergies suck.

If no fever I wait it out and see if it subsides. But if you feel like his cough is getting progressively harder and tighter I would go in. With my oldest I'm usually more cautious b/c he had to go on a nebulizer twice last year b/c his oxygen levels dropped pretty low b/c he was wheezing. He has environmental, dust mite, and dog allergies so I'm usually more on edge if I notice he's working harder to breathe. Hopefully it's nothing and it goes away in a few days.

We usually wait it out for a few days (up to a week) as long as there is no fever. Hope your LO feels better soon.

We go after a couple of days, but my DS usually has ear infections that result from it. He's getting tubes in a couple of weeks.

If it's just a cough and runny nose I just wait it out. I generally don't call or go in unless there's a fever for several days and change in her demeanor

Since you said there is no fever, unless a cough is wheezy or barky sounding it's unfortunately one of those things that just takes time.

Have you taken LO into a steamy shower and run a humidifier while he sleeps? That helps mine with some of the gunky stuff.

a cough i wouldn't go in unless it becomes wheezy. that could be the sign of a respiratory infection. but kids can cough and have a runny nose for weeks and weeks.

How long do you wait out a cough and runny nose with no fever before you call or see the pediatrician? Cough started out dry, but has gotten progressively "junkier." It's been probably 3 days. He coughs in his sleep but it isn't really waking him up (knock on wood). Our ped has hours tomorrow, so I am considering calling, but also thinking I should just wait it out a couple more days. He hasn't had a fever, and is still behaving pretty normally. How long do you wait things out?

ETA: D is 12 months old.
