LO1 often coughs while lying down from post nasal drip, even if i don't notice a runny nose. I would guess it's something like that, maybe from teething or a slight virus.

@hellobeeboston: DD will get sinus infections no other symptoms then a dry cough and a cough that only happens at night when she is laying down because of the drainage

Has the ped said that the lungs are clear? Have they listened while he's laying down?

I would for sure bring him in, if it's nothing, it's nothing, but if it's something, I would want to know. My son always benefited from nebulizer treatments for coughing, so I'd ask the ped about that.

@littlebug: YES. We have a very old cat. She is mostly in the basement, rarely upstairs near the bedrooms, but does hang out in the living room/kitchen and he's down on the floor with her. But he doesn't cough until he's in his bed, not in the living room. My Ped also thought he could be allergic to her... I could go the route of allergy testing, but holding off on that for now. Plus, if he is allergic to her, what can we do?! She's 16. But I have also suspected some allergy to her. That was part of the reason I got the air purifiers.....So interesting your LO is coughing too - isn't it so frustrating not to be able to pinpoint the cause?!

@FaithFertility: yes, his room is the only place he sleeps/naps. I was trying to think of when we traveled and he was in the pack n play if he coughed, but can't really remember! what kind of sinus issues?

Any pets? My daughter has been coughing I swear since birth, it feels like. Sometimes it's wet, sometimes it's dry. Ped never seems concerned. I run a humidifer, I don't run a humidifier, it never seems to make a difference. I'm starting to wonder if she's allergic to our cat. I know they say babies can't have allergies, but I just can't figure out what else it could be.

My DD has an eye infection, teething and a bit of a runny nose. She's been coughing at night only (often just in the mornings). We started giving her a spoonful (like baby spoon) of honey before bed. Coughing is much much better (until morning at least and no more wake ups). Honey is fine after a year (she's 18 months). Might be worth a try.

@hellobeeboston: Is his room the only place he lays down?! If he has sinus issues it may only drain or cause ehim to caught laying down?!

Just trying to think of other avenues

@Mama Bird: thanks :)

yeah, this is really two posts in one as i do think they're separate. but i'm still questioning the dry cough. and now the wet cough with no other symptoms which is also a mystery!

Maybe the dry cough and the wet cough are not related. Could be he's been teething for a while, and now has a bug on top of that. If it's viral the doctor can't really give anything for that, but might be good to get checked out anyway in case it's turning into an ear infection or something. Hope he feels better soon!

@hellobeeboston: Hmm definitely a good place to start! Older houses usually "breathe" better than new houses so hopefully its nothing. Actually, if you are in Boston I can try to find the name of who my neighbors used for their testing.

@psw27: oh, also - i just started running the humidifier a couple weeks ago per the Ped's recommendation... and i'm running on low, so i haven't seen too much moisture build up yet.

but our house is older - who knows what is in the walls... ugh.

@psw27: yes, pretty much only in his room. the pediatrician was asking if he was coughing when he slept anywhere else but we're always home!

OK - now I'm googling Mold surveys in my area. :bummed:

Does he only cough in his room? No where else? My first thought was also mold. Maybe the humidifier is making it too moist and it is growing on the windows? (This happened to my neighbors.)

help me figure out what's going on with my just-turned-one-year old....

A little backstory: he's been coughing in his crib for a while, like, months - but it's been a dry cough and it usually doesn't disturb him, and it's ONLY when he's laying down in his crib, never during the day. I've brought it up with the Ped a couple times, we think it could be due to extra saliva from teething (he only got his first two teeth at 11 months, no more yet)... I've been changing his sheets often, I have been running an air purifier, and then lately I've started running a cool mist humidifier.

Cut to a week ago - the dry cough turned into a mucousy cough - so I've elevated his crib a bit with a crib wedge. Last night & 2 nights ago he was up coughing A LOT in the middle of the night, very wet-sounding, but he got himself back to sleep. He coughs a bit when we pick him up, but then no more all day, only when laying down... No runny nose either.

Earlier this week he felt slightly warm but his temp was hovering around 99, so, no fever.

He has been SO FUSSY all week... it's so sad. He's so off. But, with barely a cold, and no fever, i'm not sure what to do. Should I bring him into ped?

is it possible he has an ear infection even though he doesn't have a fever, and could the congestion in his chest cause it?
