@skipra: You're right, eating healthier isn't a bad thing. I'm actually kind of looking forward to having directions to follow. I do so much better with stuff like that when there are clear guidelines to follow. I'm a direction follower at heart, I just have to believe the directions I'm following are necessary. Looking at my life, this is true for EVERYTHING I encounter, ha!

I haven't gotten my official glucose monitor yet. Right now I'm borrowing a friends, and it is a different model. I'll be curious to see what they give me, and I'll make sure to bring up the topic at my next OB appointment and see what she says. Actually, when I retake the test tomorrow I might self test along with the blood draws just for comparison sake. My OB will just LOVE me... lol!

@swedishfish: Thanks for clarifying. Sorry about the diagnosis. It stinks to have to deal with it but for your health and the baby's it is lucky that doctors know to test for it. My mom had undiagnosed GD with my sister and as a result, she was too large which led to shoulder dystocia (and a permanent shoulder problem for my sister), and a stay in the NICU due to sugar levels.
Hopefully since it was borderline for you it will just involve eating healthier overall which is never a bad thing! Just curious - do you test your levels with the same monitors that they checked your blood with initially?

I didn't find out til later but I was very borderline as well, and so upset about the diagnosis especially since I was fine with my first pregnancy. But watching my diet helped keep my weight down and it was super easy to control with my diet. Sometimes after a splurgy meal my husband would test too and his blood sugar number would be higher than mine.. Haha! ;) good luck no matter what happens.

I was really afraid that my GD diagnosis would be the starting point of a "cascade of interventions" that ended in an induction/c section. I think we measure differently in Canada, but 5.9 is the fasting cut off for the diagnosis and I was a 5.87 that rounded up, and then my two tests after the glucose were in normal range. I was convinced it was a bad day, or my prenatal vitamin that I took did something to my fasting level, or I'd eaten something wrong for dinner... but as the pregnancy progressed it did become more evident and I did end up requiring injectible insulin to control it. And had all the extra ultrasounds and NSTs. My 36 week ultrasound measured a 8lb7oz baby, and there was talk that at his rate she'd be almost 11lbs at 40 weeks, and to think about a scheduled induction early, and they might refuse to allow me to attempt to give birth vaginally if a later ultrasound showed a big baby, which I refused and said I'd potentially reconsider at 40w1d. I ended up naturally giving birth to a 7lb 9oz baby at 38.5 weeks.

Glad you get to retest. I had GD and it was hard for me to control due to a medication I was on, so I had to take insulin and do lots of finger pricks along with the diet and my numbers were still pretty elevated. I did have to go to a high risk doctor and have lots of ultrasounds, but that was the only thing. No stress tests, and LO came early so I didn't need an induction. Also, they were only going to induce if she was big, which she was, but it wasn't a given, you have GD so you'll be induced.

@skipra: nah, blood glucose monitors can differ greatly from drawn blood results. The monitor results should be taken with a grain of salt.

@MsBadger: I was very worried that I would be forced into an induction or that I would not be able to make decisions regarding our care once I got the GD diagnosis, but I was happy to learn that that wasn't the case.

Sorry I am just a little confused. Are you saying when they checked before giving you the drink you got different results between the monitor and the actual blood draw? Doesn't the doctor find that weird? Especially with a difference of 16 points?

Thanks everyone! I just wanted to reiterate, I am not opposed to the diagnosis IF it's justified, I just wanted to make sure it was justified.

I called and talked to the doctor. Her opinion on interpreting the test result is, you're either under or over the cutoff, from there it doesn't really matter. So because I was over, I will be treated for GD, but I would more than likely be VERY easy to control with diet.

She was also very encouraging, like you all were, that as long as things stay controlled and everything is measuring fine, there is no reason why I will have to be induced. I also asked about the fetal NSTs and measurement ultrasounds. She asked me if I was looking to negotiate, I told her I was in real estate, I am ALWAYS looking to negotiate. She laughed. But I told her, in all seriousness, my main goal was to have a healthy baby and I don't want to do anything to jeopardize that, but I also didn't want to consent blindly to tests that may be unnecessary. She understood and told me that as long as things looked good when the time came, there would be room to negotiate all of the stuff I was concerned about. So that was very reassuring.

She is going to let me take the test again. I told her it was something I needed to do to get on board fully with this whole thing. I really don't expect the results to come back any different, but I need that confirmed by another test in order to get rid of that little skeptical voice in my head. She wanted to know what I would expect to happen if this test came back normal. I told her we'd negotiate if and when that time came  .

All in all, I think our conversation reaffirmed that I made the right choice in choosing her to be my OB. I think what frightened me the most about this whole thing wasn't the GD, it was that medical decisions were being taken out of my control and I no longer had a say in my treatment.

I had GD with my pregnancy and was able to go on to have a normal pregnancy, labor, and delivery. My LO was 7 lb. 10.8 oz. at birth. I resisted the diagnosis at first, but once I started the diet I felt much better. I hadn't realized how crappy I felt until I started controlling my sugar.

I had GD with my pregnancy, but don't remember what my test numbers were.

I ended up with a lot more appointments and a lot more ultrasounds to track baby's size — but like @2PeasinaPod: I ended up with a small baby (5lbs 5oz), so controlling the GD worked. I also had a c section, but for reasons not related to GD. LO's blood sugar was fine at birth.

I resisted the diagnosis at first too. I have PCOS and am pre-diabetic, and I always knew my numbers would be slightly elevated. If you don't really have GD, then it's not a big deal - you test a few times a day, your numbers are fine, no problem. However, if you do have a problem then it's really important to make sure it's controlled, whether through diet or insulin.

@MsBadger: If it makes you feel better, I also had GD and thought I would pass with flying colors. To give you context, I was 5'1" and 110 pounds when I got pregnant and gained a total of 25 pounds during pregnancy. I failed my glucose test miserably and got set up with an endo. We monitored my blood sugar after eating, and while it was semi normal, it was still high.

My mom had gestational diabetes and has type II diabetes now at 60. It just runs in my family. I went on to continue to monitor my blood sugar with diet and exercise and went into labor naturally at 39w, 6d. I had complications during delivery that were completely unrelated to GD, and ended up with an emergency C-section. LO was 6 pounds, 13 ounces. No where near the size everyone feared he would be if I went longer than my due date.

I think you should just monitor. It certainly won't hurt. I also had to go for non-stress tests twice a week once I made it to 34 weeks. In all, they just want to be sure you and the baby are doing ok. LO's blood sugar was totally normal at birth

My GD was determined by my A1C blood results (The A1C test gives you a picture of your average blood glucose (blood sugar) control for the past 2 to 3 months) early in my pregnancy.

I think the legend said 5.9 and up and you had GD. I had a 5.7 (high end for pregnancy) so I was confused and upset by it but everything worked out. I just had to rework my diet and I never had to go on meds.

Best of luck to you!

Those are really high numbers for pregnancy. Most women lose blood sugar quickly, because the baby sucks everything from them. Women with GD have numbers like yours.

If it were a bad day, they'll have you track your numbers and hopefully it can all be diet controlled. But, if there's a need for insulin as your pregnancy progresses, that's ok, too.

It depends what you ate for dinner, too. You NEED to eat carbs, so that your liver doesn't produce glucose for you...you need to give your body the glucose from your food. BUT, you need insulin to "unlock" the glucose and get it to where it needs to be (and not in your blood and headed straight for your baby!) For dinner, you should be eating about 45g of carbs. If you only had a bit of carbs, and more protein and fat, you won't get the reading you need on the glucose meter.

Don't be scared of GD and tests. Diagnosing it is a really good thing. I've been the victim of undiagnosed GD twice before this pregnancy, and one baby was preterm and the other was a demise during labor.

So I went in for my Glucose Tolerance Test last Wednesday. My Doctor does the 2-hour. Everything went well at the test. First they tested my blood sugar with the hand held monitor to make sure it wasn't already high, 81, perfectly normal. They then drew blood, made me drink the orange goo, and drew blood again at 1 and 2 hours.

Thursday night I got the call from the nurse that I "failed" the test and was diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes. She went on the rattle off all the things on her checklist and told me that the Diabetic Counselor would call me to make an appointment to get me setup with a diet and a monitor. Ok, kinda overwhelming, but it sounded like a plan. She didn't give me my actual numbers when she called, and unfortunately the office is closed on Fridays.

I wake up Saturday and my test results are up on my online chart. Yay! Lets see how bad I failed this thing.

Fasting Glucose: 97 (70-91 normal)
1 Hour: 174 (70-179 normal)
2 Hours: 150 (70-152 normal)

I "failed" because my fasting glucose was 6 points above normal... Not what I was expecting.

I started checking my blood sugar last night (a friend gave me her sterile supplies). My numbers were totally normal 2 hours after dinner, fasting this morning and after breakfast this morning.

I don't really know where to go from here. I feel like I could possibly be being painted with a very large brush for something I don't even have that could have potential to effect my labor and delivery. I'm not worried at all about the whole diet/monitoring. The things I eat basically follow the diet anyway, and I find the monitoring quite interesting. I'm worried that unless I have more to confirm this diagnosis, I'm going to forever be skeptical and then I won't be able to get on board with my doctor when she makes suggestions like doing more ultrasounds or fetal non-stress tests or induction later down the road.

Any advice/suggestions/insight?
