I love seeing how the majority votes are either currently having one car or absolutely needing two!

I'm a wahm and we don't live in a very large city so taking DH to work if I need the car for errands is doable AND he can come home for lunch to drop the car to me if I had a rough night with P and didn't want to wake up in the morning to take him.

@Mrs. Pen: Right now we have a multi-car discount for our insurance and since DH is still young we actually pay only 40 cents more a month to have both cars insured. We figure we might as well keep it insured just in case I need it in an emergency.

I'm actually really excited about how we could be financially at the end of this year AND with a new car.... Figure that will keep us, me, going when it gets tough/annoying/inconveniencing .

Our work schedules overlap alot so we need two cars. Plus we each have so much to do, being at home with errands to run while he is at work with the car just doesn't work. We only use his car when we are together though to cut down as much as we can.

We could only get by with only 1 vehicle until I go back to work, but my shift work schedule (12 hour shifts, starting and ending in odd hours), and DH's odd work hours that overlap mine mean having 1 vehicle when I go back to work, one of us would need to start taking cabs (which is in no way better financially that having a second car).

We only have one car and love it. We could easily afford a second car but there's no need as DH rides his bike to/from work and I walk or take public transport most places. Most weeks our car gets driven once, maybe twice at best. It's great!

We're currently a one-vehicle household. It works for us as DH travels for work, so he really isn't home often. There's been some bumps in the road (heheheh), but we usually manage to work it out fine. Once DH settles down, however, we know we'll probably have to look at getting something else.

We could make it work, but it would be very, very difficult. DH could metro to work, but it would make for 2-3 hours of commuting every day. I could be stuck here with no car, but then we would use time in our already packed weekends running errands. Plus, having a car helps me get out of the house, aka. Fight depression. It's worth it for us to have two.

We probably could just have one for the next three months because DH is on straight days and could get a ride in to work. Normally he is on shift work and has a slightly different start and end time than our neighbours that all carpool together. So generally, we need two cars as I drive around for work.

Oh I should note we live pretty rurally in that public transportation DOES NOT exist out here. That's actually partly why we considered moving to the cities (an hour south, ie: hour commute for DH) because then I could leave whenever I needed to and be involved in things. But like I said, we make it work.

I never ever thought it would be an option until it became necessary and we made it work!

DH got into an accident, ins wouldn't cover it and it cost too much to fix on our own, the car was worth less than the damage.

We were both working FT at the time, in addition I worked two other pt jobs. So I would drive DH 30 mins to work, drive to my job which was 30 mins opposite direction. Go to my next job 5 miles away, then drive back to pick up DH.

We spent a lot of time waiting around for the other, we often had opposite shifts.

After a few months we Finally we moved two miles away from dh's work. Before we had LO I would drop him off and pick him up and then I had the car during the day. If I ever couldn't get him for some reason, we were close enough to home that he could walk. Once I had DS I could no longer drop him off/pick him up because he worked 3 nights a week and I wouldn't wake DS up at 10:30 to drive two miles. So being a SAHM without a car has had it's challenges.

Last March we bought him a bike and now whenever it's not snowing, raining or too cold, he bikes to work and that allows me to have the car. This winter has been the worst though: stuck at home with LO all week since DH can't bike. It's been really cold.

But we make it work and its so worth it. We save gas and we save ins money.

DH drives primarily only manuals. While he keeps saying he really needs to teach me, every time its ever become a problem and we're down to one car? I've either been pregnant or been in really bad need of my car. Needless to say, my car is a manual. But we would need two cars anyways since he has no one to commute to work with and I need my car for LO - getting out, doctor's appointments, things we need for the house, etc. - since I'm a SAHM. Add to that that all my appointments are about to double with two LOs (two under two)? Nu uh, I -NEED- my car.

We could because we live in the city and have almost everything accessible within walking distance, but it would be tougher for me since I would have to walk everywhere. We had only one car before LO, but now it's easier to be able to drive to various places because it gets heavy/tiresome with the stroller.
