I'm sorry this person didn't show the best professionalism with your LO. As a nurse myself, I can see why she would want to warn you so you could hold him tighter to prevent the needle from causing trauma if he were to suddenly squirm more, but there is no need to repeat it. She probably just didn't know what to say other than "Sorry I am directly causing your child to scream in pain."

Was she a RN? Just curious.

i bet she thought she was displaying empathy by saying that it burned... trying to explain why he was reacting that way.

Hugs, sounds like you got a bad nurse there. We see the same nurses for the shots, so they've been upfront with us, but never mean.

omg! I would probably call and say something. I've totally lost any patience I have for awful people. I also would have probably "nicely" said, "thanks for reminding us, I couldn't tell" or "thanks, that's super helpful" at the 2nd and/or 3rd comment!

Why would she say that? Even if I was the one getting the injection I wouldn't want to know that it was going to "hurt worse and burn!" Let alone being a momma and having to watch your child in pain. Dumb lady.

I would say something to the pedi about the nurse's behavior. While it is good to warn that it may hurt, there is no need to say it multiple times.

The first time I went to donate blood, the nurse kept asking me if I really wanted to do it; eventually I ended up running to a bathroom in tears because she scared me about how uncomfortable it was going to be. I was in my twenties but my dad was with me and lit into the nurse about her behavior.

How awful!! I absolutely hate the injections - having to hold LO while someone causes her pain. You really didn't need that. It sounds almost as though she was enjoying it.

@LovelyPlum: I might do that...

@mediagirl: I guess she thought since she was there prepping we should go ahead and restrain him?? I dunno, he ran around almost the entire time his pedi was in there, and she said she was glad to have the opportunity to watch him. Except the time when he bent over to clean a spot on the floor with a tissue and then proceeded to lay down on his belly and lick said spot....but she was even amused by that! (I, on the other hand, was a bit mortified!)

Wow. WOW. What a mean nurse! Where's the empathy!?!?

Also, when we took M in for her 15 month, we totally let her run around. What's so wrong about that?

Not cool. Our visits begin and end with the nursing staff {ped. comes in between} and they usually give us all of the FYIs during the beginning and leave it at that.

I'm sorry. If it's any consolation, while the pain lingers for us, they usually get over it pretty quickly.

@MamaMoose: I didn't like hearing it the first time, but I do completely understand why she did (and, since I've cooled down a bit, appreciate it). The second time made me want to yell, because it was while it was happening, and E was giving this awful scream. The third time I just wanted to throw something.

@MamaMoose: exactly! I was glad our ped warned us that the last injection would sting and that she would cry. Helped me be prepared for what was coming. But to repeat it is not necessary. Injections are so hard aren't they? They just look so sad and scared. We're getting flu shot #1 this weekend.

Good Lord. I can understand her giving you a warning that it would be painful for him so you can manage to that (give him advil, massage the injection site, etc) but telling you THREE times in an aggressive rather than helpful tone is crappy. I'm sorry : (

E was in for his 15 month well-baby today, and at the end of the appointment his pedi left and a nurse came in to give him his vaccines. Today he got 4 injections (ugh): DTaP, PedvaxHIB, second dose of flu, and for the first time, MMR II.

So we'd already been there an hour and a half. E, due for a nap, was already restless and cranky. The nurse comes in (she's new), gives us the side-eye when we let him run around the room instead of immediately holding him down (she was still prepping the needles).

She takes forever to get the first three done, which was bad enough because he's a solid child*, and it took both me and D to keep him still enough. Then, as she was getting ready to give him the MMR, casually tells us that this one is going to hurt him even more than the others...that it was going to burn a lot.

Seriously lady, why would you tell us that?? And then as she's injecting it and he's screaming she says again "This is burning him a lot!". And then after, as I'm nearly in tears (for the first time since his very first vaccinations), she says again "That one burned him a lot."

I wanted to throw something at her! We vaccinate fully and on schedule, but it's already not something I like to do--who likes to see their child in pain? But being told--3 TIMES--exactly how much it was hurting him? So.much.worse. I'd have just as soon not known!

Ugh.

I know that getting the disease would be a billion times worse than the momentary pain of the vaccine, and he was fine by the time we got him strapped into the car seat, but still. If I was a parent already wavering about vaccines that comment might have put me on the "don't vaccinate" side. Hell we're pretty firm about getting vaccinated and it made me waver!

*I'm sure you were wondering--my solid toddler weighed in at 27lbs, 8oz and 33.2" tall (95th and 96th percentiles, respectively). Kid is tall muscle.
