Just popping on here to say the same thing happened to us and we got just DD tested since testing everyone would require multiple trips. Since she was symptomatic, we felt the test results would be pretty reliable. As in, this wasn’t a situation where she was exposed but didn’t have symptoms in which case a negative test could mean she just wasn’t sick yet. I don’t think testing everyone is necessary unless there is a known exposure, especially if testing means multiple trips and test positivity rates are low (less than 1% where I am). All that said, she tested negative so we felt good about it. A few other kids at preschool had the same cold and tested negative too. I am sick with the same thing now though and I realized how great it was to go 8 months without any sickness!

@MrsSCB: @Tionn3: I felt that it was clearly implied by my post that I was talking about if a location tested adults and children. My entire post is predicated on the concept of efficiency. It wasn't about shame, it was about logistics. Sorry that wasn't clear.

The 1st sentence of my post clearly said that if a requires a 2nd trip, I wouldn't think it necessary.

@DesertDreams88, It's not that simple for everyone in a family to go get tested at the same place or same time, depending on your county's testing capacity. My county doesn't test children under 12, those children need to go to a pediatrician, while an adult could either go to the county, or through another health care provider (and that could be urgent care or drive thru), or in my case I could get a test through my employer because I work at a hospital. Unfortunately the testing situation is an utter shit show and an embarrassment (thanks to our incompetent government). I would not necessarily make a parent feel bad for needing to go to a 2nd location to get a test because their symptomatic child ended up being positive and they were not able to get a test at the same location because of x,y,z circumstances (maybe they were told not to get a test by a health care worker). Additionally, you are supposed to quarantine until you get results, and if that child DID test positive, the entire family unit is supposed to continue to quarantine for 10 days regardless of whether the adults are also positive, and in that case the adults should then be tested (if their Doctor instructs them to), and they shouldn't feel bad about having to make a 2nd trip to get that test.

@DesertDreams88: FWIW, this may be different in other areas, but we’ve all had to go to different places to be tested anyway. My daughter got the test at her pediatrician, and they don’t test adults. I got mine through my PCP, and my husband got his at urgent care because he doesn’t have a PCP (whole other issue 🙄). But if it were an option, it would def be nice to just get it all done at once.

Since testing the family would require another trip, I would say no.

However, for the other parents on this thread, if you're bringing your kid to get tested somewhere, you might as well too. It would be more of a hassle to find out that your kid is positive then you need to go back and get tested and potentially risk your health & the tester's health by going a 2nd time.

If she is negative and your other family members' symptoms have resolved, I would not get tested.

I have a 2 year old in preschool and I am also anticipating a similar issue. Our school also won't let us back for 10 days unless we get a negative covid-19 test. It is very hard to get children tested in my county, in fact the free county testing doesn't include children under 12 years old.

As for your mother and sister, honestly asymptomatic testing is only reliable when it is done frequently enough (I'm speaking from an infectious disease background),and it shouldn't be used to relax things like mask usage and social distancing. That is not to say that asymptomatic testing is useless. I think we're moving toward saliva antigen testing which is less sensitive, but cheaper, and has the capacity to be utilized for more frequent testing (like daily or 1x a week at home/work/school etc).

@Becky: I'm also super cautious and would only test the student. Also, I agree your mom's view of testing is...impractical. What would be the point of your husband getting tested? He could get a test on a Tuesday and it could be negative and on Wednesday he could get exposed somewhere. It's not like a test gives you ongoing information. Testing or isolating before a visit is different. That is purposeful.

@Becky: we’re in the exact same situation right now. My daughter (18 months) was sent home with a temp of 100 exactly earlier this week. She needs a doctors note to go back, and the doctor required a covid test before writing the note. So we’re waiting for the result and I’m pretty confident it'll be negative. A bunch of kids in her class have been out with a cold this week. If it is negative, we don’t plan on testing any of the rest of us. Unfortunately, it was not a rapid test, so it might take awhile!

Thanks for all the feedback. It’s my mom who is super cautious, and my sister who is in town from NJ. My sister actually made my parents get tested before she would let them visit this spring even though neither had any symptoms. My mom is always saying my husband needs to get tested because she doesn’t trust he is careful enough. To which I’m basically like, one time? When he has no symptoms? Ok...

I don’t want to sound like I don’t take this seriously because I do. I 100% agree with the district’s requirement to get tested (it’s actually that they need a doctors note to return, but doctors are requiring a test so we’re just going straight to that step), it’s that I don’t think the rest of us need to.

It’s different but my kids are returning to school soon and they’ve asked that the whole family get tested and test again periodically. We had to answer questions and they are testing us because the school requested it. I think if we had filled out the question tree with your specific scenario it would have said don’t get tested.

@Anagram: We live outside Buffalo, NY. I have a colleague in another part of the state and the whole family was required to get tested when his son was sent home yesterday with a runny nose, so it seems each district can make that decision individually. I work at home, and my husband works at an office a few days a week but if meeting with clients they are masked (he has 3 other colleagues and if they are not in their own office they wear masks). Our 4 year old and 3 month old are at daycare. We don’t go places in public and have a very limited circle of people we see.

Also, this rapid site is only for students and school personnel. When I called to make an appointment they basically said “Who sent you?”

@Becky: Did the school give any guidance? Where does your younger daughter go, and are the two of you parents working from home? I’d figure if everyone else is home, only she would need a test.

We’re in NJ, and most walk-in clinics have Covid testing now, but you have to call around to find out who has rapid testing Vs the PCR tests and how long the turnaround is.

I’m mainly following your thread because I know this will happen to us at some point (my kids just started in person school), and I don’t know the protocol either.

My feeling would be that if she's negative the rest of you don't need testing, especially since you already had the same symptoms as her but you're all feeling better. Since you already had "symptoms" I would assume that you all had the same thing.

My daughter has her annual back to school cold (runny nose, and occasional sneezing fit), so needs to get a COVID test before returning to school. My younger daughter, husband, and I already had it like we do every year (always milder than her) and it lasted one day (usually it’s like 2 days, and last year she was out of school with it for 2 days this same week of school since she got sicker).

We were able to get an appointment for her tomorrow at a pop-up site run by the county specifically for rapid-testing symptomatic students and school personnel (so family members can’t get tested there). My mom is asking where the rest of us will be tested.

So...I’d prefer to not all have to get tested every time someone has a cold, which I am sure we will get simply from living in Western NY where we have cold winters. Living in NY, we wear masks at all times in public and we have a specific friend and family circle. Our county positivity rate was hovering around 1.5-2% about 2.5 weeks ago but has since gone down. Either way it’s low.

But I want to hear other’s feedback. If she is negative do you think we all need to get tested even though we’re not sick? Hers will be a rapid/15 minute test so we wouldn’t be sitting around waiting for results.

(I hope it goes without saying but if anyone in the house ever got a positive test we would all isolate together for 2 weeks and notify the district and anyone we were in contact with).
