My pediatrician said that it was most contagious during the fever but it was still contagious from fluid in the sores until they heal... but in order for it to spread from the sores they have to break open and the fluid has to be transferred to someone else's mouth or something like that. So as long as no one is licking broken sores (or sharing food stuffs) they aren't in danger.

@SeptMomma12: I would even throw toys (that you can) in the dishwasher. DD2 was SO drooly because she had sores in her mouth. I even threw her stuffed toys in the wash!

And for you and DH, remember, no utensil or food sharing!

@regberadaisy: Yes, it's supposed to be nice. Fingers crossed. We have a tent and rented tables/chairs for outside, hoping to keep people out of the house as much as possible. I've started letting everyone know. That's a great idea -- here come the Clorox wipes!

@SeptMomma12: hopefully it is a nice day and you can keep everyone outside and out of the house. I would definitely go through and disinfect as much as possible tonight. Especially door handles, in the kitchen, bathroom, etv. Where your guests will be.

So...technically per our pediatrician it is contagious during the fever. But my daycare rules are you can't come back until they have scabbed over.
I mean, at this point, I would probably keep the party and let everyone know about it and the risks associated. It's not just kids that can get it, adults too. Then whoever decides to come, it's their choice.

I just called the doctor. They said there's no clear answer on contagious period, but she would have been most contagious yesterday before anything appeared and agreed as long as she doesn't have a fever, she's okay to be at school today. She said she wouldn't cancel the party, but give parents a heads up and just keep her away from other kids as much as possible (which won't be too hard since she's not walking yet).

It seems there are a wide variety of opinions on the infectious time for this. Our pediatrician told us that the fluid in the blisters is infectious and therefore the period of contagiousness is until the sores have dried/scabbed.

My daycare days they're contagious until all the spots scab over. If hers just broke out, I would think she's still contagious. Maybe call your pediatrician to get a medical opinion.

Day care just called and said DD appears to have coxsackie. No fever, but they said she's got the obvious spots on her hands and feet. They say she doesn't need to be picked up because she doesn't have a fever and once the spots are out, she's not contagious anymore. Apparently there are two other kids in her class who have had the same thing this week - mild spots just on hands/feet, no fever.

But here's the issue... Tomorrow is her first birthday and we've got 60 people (18 kids) scheduled to come to our house. The rental company is outside right now setting up the tent, we've got the food ordered, musician scheduled, etc. I'm obviously going to give all the parents a heads up, but should I be cancelling the party? Is what day care is saying (that she's not contagious anymore) really true?

My son had it 4 times, so you would think I'd be an expert, but whenever he had it, he was really sick, high fever, etc. so there was no questions.
