@Mrsbells: wouldn't you know it daycare told my husband yesterday that someone in the toddler room has this. They sent home two babies in the infant room because they had a fever.
They reassured us that they've been cleaning everything in a diluted bleach solutions.

@Honeybee: Yeah, it's not as bad as I've ever seen... but it's as bad as I've ever seen on one of my kids. We're putting a barrier cream on 4 times daily with little improvement. I hate to step up to a steroid, because I don't want to bleach her skin...

It went through our family about 3 weeks ago. I've seen all kinds of awfulness from this virus this year, including nails falling off and bad blisters... but most kids have a really mild course :)

DS got it about a month ago; he was only 3 months. :( DD got it, too, but she was like 15 months, so I didn't feel so bad.

Anyway, just keep your eyes out for a fever, fussiness, and small bumps/rash/blisters on hands, feet, and in the mouth. To be honest, we never would have known that DS even had if I hadn't taken him into the doctor to check out his nasal congestion. She mentioned that hand, foot, and mouth had been going around, and sure enough, he had a couple little blisters at the back of his mouth. He wasn't fussy, though, and we never really saw a fever. The virus passes through their system relatively quickly, and within a few days, DS's blisters had gone away.

Good luck! I remember feeling so so guilty the first time DD got sick at about 4 months. I felt guilty with DS, too, but the thruth is that kids get sick. And in the long run, it's better to expose them now and start building up their immunity than hold off and deal with more illnesses later on down the road.

I hope your little one doesn't get it. I had two DD 10 and 3 that have been in daycare since the were little and have never gotten it even though other kids in their room have. Fingers crossed this will be the case for you as well.

I completely agree that it seems like they get sick when they are younger a lot more, but when they get to school their immune systems are pretty strong.

It can actually be spread through most bodily fluids - nasal discharge, saliva, etc. Check of the NIH article on it, if you haven't already: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000965.htm

@Mrsbells: This is both good and bad. There are studies showing that kids in daycare at a young age are less sick during the older school years (elementary, middle, and high). Of course, it means they are really sick in the middle years.

Hand, Foot, and Mouth is contagious but mostly is from stool. So your child would have to eat their stool. That is why it is so common is that young children (think potty training) aren't always so good at wiping and washing their hands. The other issue is that your caregivers may not be so good at washing their hands especially after diaper changes (not to scare you). My sister has 4 kids and has only ever had 2 with it at a time.

My son was recently exposed to walking pneumonia and really all we can do is wait out the incubation period. And I know they shared toys by mouth.

My daughter caught it her second or third week of daycare earlier this summer. At first I felt like a terrible parent, but honestly, babies are going to stick their hands (and feet) in their mouth. Good hygeine is important and you just have to do the best you can. You can't prevent everything, especially if your baby is in daycare with other kids!

@Mrsbells: Yikes!!! What a eventful week for LO!

I wash her face & hands when we get home but I should be better about doing it immediately because she doesn't get bathe till like an hour later. That scares me because she loves putting her fist in her mouth right now.

My LO's first week at daycare is turning out to be very eventful. Yesterday when I picked her up I heard them say that a toddler was sent home with a fever. Today when I took LO in they had a note up to all the parents that the toddler who was sent home has coxsackie virus. I am really worried about my LO now. Hopefully none of the othe kids there got it from the sick toddler but they all play together and some of the younger toddlers come to the baby room.
