My favorite is when we were selling our old fridge, the amount of people who inquired about it while asking for a much cheaper price on it saying they were buying it for their mother. Is that supposed to make me accept less because "you're buying it for your mom?". And how ironic that more than one person was doing that! So annoying.

Totally sucks but I think this is the norm.CL has a lot of shady people who flake out and don't show up when they say they will. What if they wait for you and you flake/don't show up or decide not to buy the item when the other person was ready to buy it?

@youboots: @Boogs: Agreed. Craigslist is like the wild, wild west - you have to move real fast or something bad might happen.

We are currently selling tons on Craigslist (new house) and it's been such a headache. I am at the point where I would rather just throw the stuff away -- people stand you up constantly and ask ridiculous questions.

I would be bummed  I think the problem with Craig's list is that it is a free-for-all with basically no etiquette. I found that it was better in most respects like ten years ago, when I used to use it a lot and found it super useful. Now not so much...

Sorry that this happened to you!
This is why I like selling/buying items on Facebook tag sale groups so much better.
All the groups in my area have rules and everyone is held accountable. It's very clear if you're the first one interested, and if not where you stand in line.

I have had this happen to me before, it's super frustrating.

Now as a seller, I do ask in my ads when they can pick up and say "soonest pickup ideal". It seems to light a bit of a fire under people and I have had luck with it. It's also lowered my no shows, which is huge!

I agree with you, first to contact/email/request it should get it. But it's happened to me before. It infuriates me when someone has claimed something and then someone else posts "I can pick it up in 5 mins".. trying to snatch it from the first person. I understand the seller wants it gone asap and may have burned in the past but those are the chances you take.

CL is full of flakes (even after several exchanged messages, I just had one), so I see her side. But, the kind thing to do in a situation like that is to message you and give you a heads up that there's other interest to see what you work out.

@808love: it's hard when the item is an hour away, and I work every day! In general, I'm the same way, that I try to see it ASAP. It was just hard to work around it in this case. And she knew that's the reason it was easier for me to come Thursday instead! I had a work meeting in her town so it was perfect... Otherwise yes, I do agree with that generally.

@Mrs.Pinecone316: yeah I've searched for those in the past and there is very limited groups/sites in my area. the stuff that is in my area typically doesn't post things for sale that I'd want/buy. I don't live rural, but more outskirts of the suburbs, if that makes sense haha. only 45 minutes from the metro area, but far enough away that it's hard to find stuff like that.

I think she should have given you the courtesy call before she gave it away or told you it goes to the first one who claims it. Just to let you know, if I really want something I will always reply with "I can pick it up today" because I know the seller will want to be as efficient as possible at getting rid of things. When we saw a truck we wanted, we made sure to be the first to see. This is kind of how it works in general on Craigslist so be aware in the future it could happen again.

That Stinks! I stopped using craigslist because people are so inconsiderate. Search Facebook for groups near you. The last 2 places I lived have Moms to moms sale groups of just that city selling sites. I had such great luck selling things without people flacking and finding good buys by more trust worthy people. They also usually have rules in place to prevent things like that from happening and will block someone if they get reports of not following the rules.

Some things to search in the FB column would be..

(your city name) Mom's to Mom's sale
(your city) online yard sell or just yard sale
(your city) Moms.

I sold some stuff from our vacation home last month.
I had one person contact me for all of the items and she was a 4 hour drive away. I had people continuing to contact me after she did and I told all of them that someone claimed it but if she didn't come through they'd be next in line. She was supposed to pick it up that day, so had she not shown up I would have immediately let the next person in line know.
