Just wanted to give an update in case anyone searches for this in the future. I had been told not to worry about it unless I got the pains more than six times an hour. When I went in for my appointment today, the doctor said it is most likely my hip bones separating causing the pain. She confirmed by pushing on where they meet which caused the same exact pain.

@bhbee: I wish I had better news! That does sound like what I experienced. Since I only work very pt I spent A LOT of time chasing my older two kids (including over summer break) so that didn't help. Thankfully there's a light at the end of the tunnel! How exciting that you are past the halfway point!!

My BH were very painful. For several months. They often made me stop what I was doing to catch my breath. They started around 25-26 weeks and ramped up in frequency and intensity.

@2littlepumpkins: ugh this has me worried for third tri with #3! Last time I saw my ob (around 20w) and mentioned having pubic bone pain and BH already and she was like yeah ... third pregnancies are painful. And seriously this baby is so low it is ridiculous! Glad it’s not just me!

I had painful BH like this, def by 29 weeks this 3rd time. My baby was also very low. The last trimester honestly got very painful! The day lo was born I could already feel relief despite recovering from birth. What I did was to try to keep hydrated and to take it as easy as I could, even though it drove me nuts sometimes. Mine usually were bad at night and gone in the morning, and the one time they were still frequent and bad in the morning, I was in labor. So you may also find a pattern and keep an eye on that. If they are painful this time and don't stop at all I'd call in!

For my second it was totally not true that BH were not painful. They started early and came often and were defintely painful at times (but not like active labor painful ... cramps would be reasonable to describe). It was definitely different than my first. Water and rest would help and that determined to me how worried I should be.
On the plus side, my labor was about 4 hours vs 18 with my first so I like to think my uterus got some done in advance :silly:

ETA I should add I never had any preterm labor ... #2 was born on his due date!

I second what others have said - hydrate hydrate hydrate. I would also ask your doctor about adding magnesium to your diet (I recommend Calm - its a powder you can mix into anything). And never be afraid to go in and get checked. Sometimes I would get so anxious about the BH, it would ramp up my anxiety which would make me get more BH - vicious cycle.

@Ms. RV: Glad to hear it!! I should go drink some more too... :)

I've been reading more about BH contractions, and some articles say that they can be painful/uncomfortable. I've definitely had some ones that border on painful, and that was when I distinctly remember NOT being well hydrated.

Water is definitely helping the intensity. I have had a couple little twinges since my first post but nothing nearly as bad.

@Ms. RV: I never associated the cramps I'd get when dehydrated with BH contractions, specifically because they WERE painful - it sounds like what you have is similar. If I were you, I'd proactively try to drink more water (and especially if you start to feel crampy.) Obviously if water doesn't help, give the doctor a call!

@Ms. RV: My OB always told me to drink at least 80 oz of water/day while pregnant...more if you can. I found my BH contractions were more frequent when I didn't hit that mark. If they're painful, give your doc a call. It never hurts to get their opinion.

@Ms. RV: I agree with @Truth Bombs: - CALL. I would also probably ask for an appt. just to get everything checked out. I had tons and tons of BH contractions with both pregnancies; I had pre-term labor with my first, and I had so many BH with my second that I was admitted (at 30 weeks) for monitoring. BH should not be painful (although they are definitely uncomfortable).

@ineebee: @raspberries: I am definitely not well hydrated when I experience these. I will up my water intake. Also- I thought BH weren't supposed to be painful? I never got them with DD.

I agree with @ineebee: - especially late in my second pregnancy, I'd get cramps with being active if I hadn't had enough water that day. (And I use "active" loosely - I feel like grocery shopping totally counts as activity.) The good news is, they'd go away pretty soon after I hydrated.

I’d be inclined to think that they’re BH contractions, but if this is your first, then I wouldn’t think twice about calling the doctor just to be safe!

Could hydration be an issue? I’m only learning during my second pregnancy how important it is to stay ridiculously hydrated to keep BH contractions from getting out of control.

I am 29 weeks along and baby is head down. Yesterday while grocery shopping I would get what felt like bad period cramps for like five seconds and then they would stop. It was painful enough to break my concentration. I have gotten the same thing a couple of times today (always while walking) but not as painful. Is this just the baby hitting his head against a nerve or something? Anyone ever feel anything like this?
