Then rinsed it really well and it got the gunk out. It made a huge difference. The humidifier is annoying because you have to empty out the basin and the drop container every night. But I can't live without it so I just deal with the hassle. I use filtered water only. And every few days, I clean it out by pouring in the vinegar/water solution, drop in the sponge, close the lid and shake it vigorously in all directions. I wish my hand was small enough to fit through that tiny hole so that I can hand wash it. It seemed to get most of the ick out because of the sponge rubbing against the plastic. I tried it with other types of sponges but it didn't "hit" the plastic as hard as the steel sponge. There is gut starting to build up on the inside of the "drop" where the water goes. I cleaned with the vinegar solution and let it sit even longer.
