@banana - what kind of filtered water do you use? Do you just use a Brita pitcher or something like that?

@matador84: I actually put a little bleach in it tonight. Then rinsed it really well and it got the gunk out. Now I am going to just clean with the vinegar every couple days and use filtered water and see if that helps.

Can you run through the dishwasher? We have the same humidifier and the cap where you pour water gets moldy.

@Smurfette: Yeah, it's really annoying. I wish they would invent a self-cleaning humidifier!

@banana: I guess I need to do the vinegar solution more often. I could always clean it after I finish nursing, then sneak back in once she falls asleep.

@Smurfette: I would DEFINITELY try the filtered water then. It made a huge difference. The humidifier is annoying because you have to empty out the basin and the drop container every night. But I can't live without it so I just deal with the hassle. I use filtered water only. And every few days, I clean it out by pouring in the vinegar/water solution, drop in the sponge, close the lid and shake it vigorously in all directions. I wish my hand was small enough to fit through that tiny hole so that I can hand wash it. I bothers me that I can't wash it by hand!

@banana: Thanks! I am using tap water. I will try the filtered water. I don't have much time with R after work, and I hate that I have to spend it cleaning the stupid humidifier!

@Smurfette: I used one of these:

http://www.amazon.com/Fuller-Brush-Stainless-Steel-Sponges/dp/B0006B0S8M

I just bought it at a local supermarket. I forgot to mention, do you use filtered water? I only use filtered water and it leaves way less gunk than when I use tap water!

I have the same humidifier and I just throw in a stainless steel sponge in the drop, pour in some vinegar/water solution and swish it around like crazy. It seemed to get most of the ick out because of the sponge rubbing against the plastic. I tried it with other types of sponges but it didn't "hit" the plastic as hard as the steel sponge. I don't think it's 100% clean but it felt pretty decent to me.

I bought this humidifier after reading here that it was easy to clean. There is gut starting to build up on the inside of the "drop" where the water goes. I cleaned with the vinegar solution and let it sit even longer. But it didn't get it all out.

What else can I do? I don't want to use it now cause I don't want her breathing that in
