@annem1990: My son was just like this!! Anytime we were out, especially in a loud place with lots of people, he was a dream - in a quiet, dark, calm house hell would break loose! Hang in there - it gets better xx

Thanks all!
My sister and I went to dinner tonight and took LO (DH had to work). He literally slept in his car seat the whole 3 hours. It's mind-boggling to me that he can be in his own home, snuggling with Mom and dad and be screaming all day. Then I take him to a restaurant and he's totally content and A-Ok with not being held.
We're home now and DH is pacing around the house as he screams. I'm sort of laughing (and crying!!) at the irony of it all and how different our lives are.
Good thing he's so cute

My second was like this for a few weeks. She was in this weird zone where she tried to be up for longer stretches but still was pretty tired and grumpy when awake until she could handle the awake time.

6 weeks is also a growth spurt, so they are hungry all the time and fussy unless being constantly fed! At least with my babies. It will get better!! <3

@annem1990: 6 weeks was the absolute worst with both of my girls. They were just generally pissed to be on the outside and had fully realized it at that point, ha! Hang in there. It should get much better within a few weeks.

I did a lot of baby wearing with my second around that time. He loved to be snuggled up close to me and it seemed to help with his gas. The worst for us was at night, he would scream for two to three hours after midnight. Every single night for a month. It was rough but he eventually outgrew it.

@annem1990: The thing is, at this age, crying is the ONLY way a baby can communicate. Like they may JUST start smiling soon or squawking, but for the most part, everything in their life is like sensory overload right now and they're just wailing because they don't understand it and its scary. Babying is hard, yo. The only thing you can really do is help them get really good sleep/rest so that they can process their new learning and just hold them and love on them. Wearing them at this age helps a lot.

Thank you for the encouragement! It's nice to hear I'm not alone. I am just going to take it day by day and be thankful for those short periods of calm. I just hate seeing him so sad and feeling like I can't do anything about it.

My second was like this. She was super sleepy as a newborn then woke up around 8 weeks and didn't stop crying for 1.5-2months. Then one day she just stopped. My ped said it could have been upset stomach, gas issues, sleep problems (she became a horrible sleeper around this time too), or just plain colic. I tried a bunch of stuff: nursed her on demand, cut out foods from my diet, gas drops, wore her constantly, burped her really well etc etc and nothing worked. She just had to grow out of it I guess. She's 6mo now and always super happy and chill (except when we are in the car. She's still not a fan of that). I hope yours grows out of it soon! This too will pass.

Colic peaks at 6-8 weeks. If you Google Weissbluth's "peak of fussiness" you should see something about it. It generally tapers down gradually and gets better by 12 weeks.

Also, there is a growth spurt at 6 weeks and a developmental Wonder Week at 8 weeks which overlap with each other. So they are hungry, cranky, and fussy.

Basically, month 2 of life sucks.

But all sounds normal if he's eating and sleeping great.

6 weeks is around the time that colic pops up for some babies. There is also a developmental leap around that time where babies become more aware of their place in the world. Do you have the Wonder Weeks app? It shows when your baby goes through a developmental leap and it saved my sanity on multiple occasions with my first. Hang in there, things will get better soon!!

My LO will be 6 weeks tomorrow. He just seems so unhappy all the time :crying:
He sleeps great (both during the night and naps), but when he's awake he just screams. He is mostly fed my pumped breast milk, but gets the occasional bottle of formula. His weight gain is great, never spits ups, and goes back down easily in his MON feeds.

Some things soothe him momentarily- pacifier, stroller, bouncing, carrier, etc. I'm so sad my content little newborn now seems so miserable. I want him to enjoy "playtime," but his whole awake periods are me trying to calm him.

Have others experienced this? Is it just normal development? Or could something else be wrong? My pediatrician doesn't seem concerned, but it's just so hard to watch him be so sad all day
