Do you have a clock that ticks or a sound machine that mimics a heart beating?

We had that issue with a rescue puppy once and we attached a ticking clock to the crate. The sound seemed to sooth him. Maybe he's just used to having the sound of another dog around and that's why he's so lonely?

This isn't going to make you feel better, but my rescue dog did the same thing. Honestly, I couldn't fix the issue until she was a little older and got over the separation anxiety. Time was the only thing that worked for us. I think she got over the barking at about a year old? But my dog was abandoned 3 times before I adopted her at six months, so her issues were severe.

She just needed to understand that I would leave and then I would come back. So anything you can do to reinforce that in increasing increments is good. Once she got the hang of the fact that the crate meant she was going to a safe place until I returned, she got on board. She got to the point where whenever she saw me put my makeup in the morning, she'd go into the crate on her own.

I tried all the tricks. In act, she ate the blanket I put in there with her for comfort and she had a bowel obstruction she needed surgery for! While she enjoyed her Kongs, once they were empty, she'd just start barking. Covering the crate didn't help either.

One thing she still cannot abide (and she is 11 now) is being crated when someone is home. To her, the deal is that she is crated to be safe when she's alone. So if someone else is home, she's gonna bark it out and let them know. My roommates complained about the barking until we all realized what the problem was and after that, they'd just let her roam around the house until they left too. I don't know if perhaps your dog can hear your neighbor and so she thinks someone else is home too or that it scares here to hear other people moving about?

@Bluemasonjar: We weren't too familiar with it either! We're totally guessing at how big our guy might be. The shelter said maybe 30 to 40 pounds, but we're thinking bigger. He's got some huge paws!!

I was going to suggest moving the crate as well. When we first got our puppy we lived in an apartment and I kept the crate in the 2nd bedroom. He barked a ton. Once I moved the crate into our room at night and into the main living area during the day he was soooo much better!

The 5-6 hours of sleep then needing to go out made me laugh. We got our dog just over a year before having our LO and I totally equated puppy toilet training (overnight) to having a newborn.

@IRunForFun His mom is part Boston Terrier. The rescue wasn't sure what else she was mixed with but my boy is a 63 pound ball of energy. I love running into other Catahoula owners since a lot of people aren't familiar with the breed.

@IRunForFun: I read once that leaving a worn tshirt in the crate can help with separation anxiety. Your scent is comforting to them. All the other tricks I know were mentioned already. What a cutie!!

I have a Catahoula mix too! He used to whine in his crate but we made it a point to never let him out until he was quiet and he always gets a treat when we put him in. I would suggest a Kong too. We fill it with PB or yogurt and freeze it and the moment I open the freezer drawer my `1 year old pup runs to his crate. A routine definitely helps and it will get better as he gets older. I promise!

He's a pretty dog! We successfully crate trained our dog and she doesn't bark or cry in it. We never used the crate for punishment, left it open when not in use so she'd go in it, and we always give a treat and say "time to sleep" when she gets in. Sounds like you're doing all of this. We would place her in her crate with us in the room and we ignored her if she cried. Once she was silent for 10 minutes straight, we would let her out. At night or when we were leaving her, we would give her a kong with pb in it to entertain her so she wouldn't get upset at us leaving her. These items worked really well. After a few months, we woke up to her barking at 5-6 am every morning and we thought she just needed to potty. She never had to go. We finally realized she was waking up and upset at being alone. (she was downstairs in her crate and we were upstairs) We moved her crate into our room and she didn't wake up early and bark anymore. And I echo the above comment about plenty of exercise to tire him out! Good luck!

@IRunForFun: ah, bummer! Kongs are expensive and are something that I wish I had invented. I could be so rich.

Another thing I did for separation issues was practice leaving, waiting outside for 5 minutes, then coming back in. Working my way up with time. That's a weekend project and there's a point you just have to go.

It's hard b/c your puppy is so cute and you want to play with them all the time, but it's good practice to have them be alone or have to entertain themselves when you ARE in the house. That way they don't come to associate being in the crate or isolated with you leaving.

My current dog would fuss in her crate, but when I realized she loved the AC, I turned a box fan towards her direction in the crate, and lo and behold, she quieted down!

ETA: I'm sure you're already doing this, but I would try to get a good play session or a walk in before leaving. Tired dog = good dog!

Our puppy's crate is in our bedroom, and we do keep a light blanket draped over the top. She will bark at first but I can hear her stop when I am downstairs getting ready to leave. We live in a town house, but fortunately don't have anyone in the house on the other side of us at the moment, but I can definitely understand how stressful it is when your dog is making noise and you are concerned about disturbing your neighbor.

We also put a peanut butter filled Kong in for Isis. It helps a lot! :)

Good luck!

@Happygal: I do think it's more of a separation issue than a crate issue. We've been trying to work on it by putting him in the crate for a while when we're home and going on about our business around him. We will have to keep doing that.

@PurplePumps: Sounds like the kong is something we really need to try!

What a cute puppy!

Does he bark in the crate other times then night? You could work on that with him. Check out Susan Garrett's crate games for REALLY getting your dog into the crate.

Do you think this is a crate issue or separation issue? It sounds to me more like protesting that you're leaving, and I think I'd focus on that.

My first puppy hated when I left, and I checked in with neighbors as well to see how she was doing (she was noisy!) I practiced a routine. Putting her in the crate with a stuffed kong before right before leaving and putting on some kind of white noise--a fan or the TV. When I came home, I put away my keys and didn't rush right to the crate. Made it a non-event when I let her out and didn't talk until she went outside.

Good luck! Share more puppy stories, too!

I don't know if our puppy barked when we left the house but he would bark up a storm in the morning when he woke up at 6am. We tried let him 'bark it out' and ignore him so that he didn't think barking would get him his way, but it never worked. after an hour or two we'd give up and go downstairs to him and he'd stop. He stopped barking at all when he woke up once we moved the crate into our room.

For leaving during the day we got him a kong and put peanut butter in it and give it to him every time we left. He's so into the peanut butter he doesn't even care that we're gone. Once you establish a routine with leaving and returning he should be better. He just needs to know that you're coming back and havent abandoned him. If we leave our dog during the day on the weekend out of our work routine he barks for a bit sometimes (we can hear him as we leave the garage/house) but we're not sure how long he barks for.

@Amurray: The place we adopted him from said he'd been crated and been fine with it, BUT he was in the same large crate as his two siblings, so I am sure it's a huge adjustment for him to be away from them and in a whole new environment! We're trying to be very patient with him.

@irunforfun make sure there is proper ventilation, you may want to try a lightweight fleece that offers a bit of noise/light blocking. I would also check in with the place where you adopted him, they want to be sure adoptions are successful. Do you have water available to him in there?

If you cover it with a blanket it will help. At least it did for our girl when she was little. You can also shove some extra pillows in the back so it is more cave like. I also agree with moving it to your bedroom. That's what we did with Lucky, we moved her out to the living room once she was a little older.

@Danizaur: Hmmm...right now the crate is located outside of our bedroom, in the entry to the living room area, but he can hear us in our bedroom if we leave the doors open. I'd thought about keeping the crate in the bedroom but things are crowded in there without it. I might have to rearrange things to make it work, though, if necessary.

Where is the crate located? Our dog hated his crate when it was in the kitchen and would whine and bark all night. One night we moved it into our bedroom and he didn't make a peep. He stopped barking and whining altogether during the day too.

I need some advice from people who have crate-trained their dogs!

We adopted a puppy from the humane society 10 days ago. He's a catahoula/beagle mix, and he's just about 12 weeks old now. He is a GREAT dog so far, he's very well-behaved for the most part. Since we've had him home he's only had two accidents in the house (and one was our fault for not reading his signs), he isn't really into chewing things that aren't toys, and he did awesome off-leash on a weekend camping trip.

The one thing we're having trouble with is barking in the crate. I feel like we've followed all the typical advice out there for crate training. The crate is the right size (big enough for him to stand and turn and change position, but not big enough for him to walk around), we have a bed and blanket in it, we got him used to it slowly by placing toys and treats in it, we put some of our worn clothing items in there for him to smell, etc. He isn't afraid of the crate - he will take his toys in there himself or go in there for a nap with the door open when we're home. But, when we put him in the crate at night or when we have to leave, he whines and then starts yipping/barking. We have not left him alone in the house in the crate for more than 2 hours at a time yet, and once he did OK, the other time (which was for 1 hour) he yipped almost the entire time.

The reason we know this and the reason it is such a problem is we live an an apartment. It's a house split into two apartments and we're on the first floor. Our upstairs neighbor knows we adopted a puppy (we checked with our landlord and her before adopting) and we asked her to text us if he is barking a lot when we are gone. She told us that the one time he yipped almost non-stop for the full hour.

When we put him in at night and he yips, we discourage the yipping, and he will eventually stop and go to sleep and be fine for 5 or 6 hours before waking up to go out. But it's hard to figure out how to stop the yipping when we're gone since we're not there to discourage the behavior!

Anyone have advice on something different to try? Or want to tell me it's still early and this is just a phase?

ETA: Attaching a picture of Rye and his puppy dog eyes.
