@FaithFertility: I wouldn't worry as much about cooked. And I personally wouldn't worry if the salad bar had a really high turnover, but sometimes it's hard to tell!

@hocuspocus: My microbiology professor in college said sprouts are the most unsafe salad bar item, because apparently they can harbor bacteria very easily in the stalk/root system and it is impossible to wash the bacteria away.

Soft cheeses are fine. It's hard to even find unpasteurized cheese in the US.

@hocuspocus: eat the cheese, but sprouts really should be avoided. In Canada, they tell you to avoid only two things - alcohol and uncooked sprouts.

I ate (and continue to eat) tons of soft cheese. I'm 16 weeks and still have little to no appetite, so when something sounds good to me, I go for it. As long as it's pasteurized, you are fine.

I also eat deli meat but only if I buy it myself from a grocery store and eat it within 2 days of opening the package - my OB said deli meat was fine in general, but I'm still a little iffy about eating it from a deli just because I'm not sure how long it has sat out. But when I buy it myself, I feel confident it's okay.

Based on the data (I am taking this from data listed in "Expecting Better") avoiding a ham sandwich lowers your risk of listeria infection from 1 in 8333 to 1 in 8255. So... your chance of getting it is really really really really slim.

Sprouts... there was a listeria outbreak with them in 2008, but again, the chance is super small. The most recent outbreak was in cantaloupe, and yet that's not on the "do not eat" list.

First baby I did not indulge Bc of fear. Second baby I enjoy soft cheeses often. I have yet to come across an unpasteurized cheese.

I don't understand why the sprouts are considered unsafe ? I'll talk to my dr. When I go in. I'll be so bummed if I can't have them :( I guess lunch meats are kind of iffy too...

Definitely read the label. TJs actually has a lot of raw milk cheese, which I bought by accident a few times while pregnant because I assumed grocery store cheese would be pasteurized. But TJ's has some triple creme brie that is pasteurized and DELICIOUS so I highly recommend that ;)

@hocuspocus: it will say pasteurized milk or whatever in the ingredients in the label. Most are. At TJs I think they usually mark the none pastuerized ones with an orange RAW sticker.

And yeah I ate them throughout my pregnancy.

I definitely did so when I was pregnant - tons of brie! My OB specifically told me it was OK as long as it's pasteurized. Most cheeses in big supermarkets are pasteurized and the label usually says "pasteurized milk."

I'm in my first trimester and I've been craving me some goat cheese, feta, and blue cheese. Did anyone eat soft cheese while prego? How unsafe is it ? I've also read that any kind of sprouts are bad too and I've been craving a turkey sandwich loaded with sprouts. I know I may be googling too much and may be overly paranoid. lol
