Sounds like my DD. It's like a switch turned on when she turned 17 months. She's now 18 months and my goodness! Some days, she's so much fun, but lately she's been so demanding and outright crying inconsolably if she doesn't get her way. No more whining, just outright crying for the littlest things, then all of the sudden happy again. Sigh.

That is a very common age for tantrums to get bad. My LO was really whiny and tantrum ing at that age. It's a little better now but I hear it gets worse at 2-3!

At least you caught a break for the first 17m! ;)

While I'm sorry we're all dealing with the same things, it is a relief to know this is truly normal. I know it's communication largely, but it's just exhausting some days!

We just went through this! LO wasn't eating anything, waking up in the night, whining about everything and just plain defiant. I am not sure what it was, maybe her last tooth moving, i don't know. She is 18.5 months. Last couple of days she has been much better so I am thinking it was yet another phase.

We're dealing with the same behavior here, too, my LO is 18 months. He's been throwing tantrums on and off since he was about a year old but they have been in full force the past few weeks. I've noticed that many of them are due to him being hungry, so we've been keeping a lot more snacks on hand and trying to encourage him to eat more at meals. We started doing time out for things like hitting on purpose, standing on the couch after I ask him to get down, etc. I will bring him over in front of our (closed) bathroom door, repeatedly say "no", explain why he's in time-out, etc and try to keep him there for a minute. His doctor said at his check-up a couple weeks ago that his behavior should get better as he starts communicating more and it's just normal. The days at home have been very long lately, though...definitely testing my patience!!!

I can't tell you if it gets better or not because LO is only 17 months but we're dealing with it too. She's pretty whiny lately and is constantly full of energy. Her eating is great some days and terrible others. I've been trying to hold my ground too and I may also try to start time out soon (I have a friend with a LO a month or two other who explained one day how she makes that work with her LO but I may wait a few more months).

Our daughter was an angel of a baby. Hardly cried, slept well, good eater, and was just an absolute joy to be around. We knew we had it lucky and I always joked that we would pay for it when she was 2 or 12. Well apparently we are paying for it starting at 17 months. For the past month or so our daughter has changed SO much! In some ways it's fun - she's communicating more and can be so sweet - but in other ways she is CRAZY. Terrible eater, runs around non-stop, and has some major attitude and is just plain whiny about everything. I know it's par for the course with toddlers but my god I did not think it would happen so soon! :) Anyone else dealing with this? Please tell me it gets better! I have been holding my ground and not letting her "win" because I don't want to make things worse for myself down the road.
