Target and Walmart also have some storage furniture that is inexpensive (though not of high quality).

Try the container store for some creative storage options. At least for the shoes. They don't do furniture but you might find something that helps you utilize your current space better.

@PurplePumps: my husband is but I don't think he would have time to build something. I'll check out the link though!

@Foodnerd81: I have the Antonius (I think it is) from ikea storage now and it s just taking up sooo much space! I keep looking on CL because there are a lot of antique dealers here but no luck so far. Keeping my fingers crossed for something soon!

We had a similar situation-- our old closet was HUGE and in our new place, it's OK but not what we are used to at all. We did get an Ikea Pax wardrobe. Like you, I looked all over for a reasonably price, not huge, nice looking wardrobe. It's hard to find! If you can order the Ikea one online, it might be your best bet. Or have you checked Craigslist? Search for Armoire and Wardrobe. Of course, this will bring up a lot of really expensive antiques but if you search through you might find something.

Also Pottery Barn has some nice ones, but they were too large for our space, and pretty expensive (like $1300 and up I think).

Are you handy? What about building a custom wall unit sort of like the Ikea wardrobes?
Something like that (without the drawer part) would be pretty easy to put together. Just need a whole bunch of plywood or particle board, which isn't too expensive. You could put up doors too or just use a decorative curtain to close it up.

@matador84: Is there a company in your area that will collect and deliver IKEA stuff for you? I know in St Louis there are several. The closest IKEA is 4 hours away in Chicago and they will go, collect and deliver the stuff to you. The cost depends on how large the boxes are, usually.

When I moved into my house, I ended up w/ 1/2 the closet space I had in my apt. I added storage under my bed for the things that I didn't wear all the time or weren't in season. That helped break a lot of it down.

At our old house, I had the closet in the master and DH had the closet in the 2nd bedroom. At our new house, DH and I share the closet in the master, and DS has his own closet now....which leaves me with 1/2 the closet I used to have.

It is driving me crazy! I have a huge pile of shoes and clothes I still wear but nowhere to put them. I have been searching for an armoire, but can't really find anything that isn't outrageously expensive. Can anyone think of some other type of storage solution that gives me more space and looks nice at a decent price?
