I have a puker! So we've done quite a few MOTN changes. But I just layer the mattress pad, sheet, mattress pad, sheet so that it's easy to rip off a layer like others have mentioned.

FWIW I nev er had a MOTN sheet change. I also just take the mattress out and change it. My sheet options were limited since we have an oval Stokke Sleepi I bought one white with grey stars from their collab with A&A and bought fabric in a fun print and an Etsy seller made a custom sheet for me, so just two sheets. We only have one mattress pad. I vote buy small now and if you have a problem with reflux or blowouts or lots of middle of the night sheet changes then do something different.

I don't find changing sheets hard at all. The mattress is so small, it's a breeze. We use white. We have 4 that we rotate through. I just do a normal wash & dry, and they are very clean looking. I do dry outside in the summer.

I will say: I've never gone wrong with a Lucie's List purchase.

I had about 8 pairs of sheets and 2 mattress protectors. More than plenty. We will be reusing them for baby 2

We got the quick zip sheets and LOOOOVE them. I give them as shower gifts now. We got one base in gray, and two top sheets also in gray, and I never had any desire for any other colors.

We haven't had to do a ton of middle of the night changes - in fact we don't change very often at all. But it's still worth it to me, especially now that we have lowered the crib mattress. Zipping off and on is just so much easier than wrangling the heavy mattress.

I've always done what others have mentioned - layer the mattress with mattress pad/sheet/mattress pad/sheet. I always have 2 sometimes 3 sheets on the bed - then if there's a diaper leak or spit up it's super easy to yank one sheet and mattress pad off and throw it in the wash.

Also have never changed a crib sheet in the MOTN (DS is 16 mo). He did pee through the cover on our bassinet pad once or twice early on, so maybe if he'd been in the crib by then we would have needed to? Never did the layering for the same reason.

We have patterned sheets - three from PBK and one from serena & lily. I think 4 might be overkill given what I mentioned above. The serena & lily one is my favorite - so, so soft.

A tip from someone in the trenches...we're not using a mattress pad right now and it makes things easier. At 6 weeks, LO spits up a lot. At first we were changing the sheet every time, but now we just move him around the crib to a clean spot and change the sheet about once daily (that may sound gross now but if you have a spitter, just wait! We do change it if he pees through). We have a Naturepedic mattress which is waterproof so I usually just wipe it down. Otherwise we'd be washing the mattress pad all the time and LO sleeps fine without it. We'll add it back when he's less fluid-y all the time. :-)

Just to add on, my son threw up at night for a phase and we still didn't have many changes during the night. And 3 sheets and one mattress pad worked great for us. I just skipped the mattress pad when it was in the wash. I think the zippers are a cool idea, but in really I think they'd annoy me (and doesn't that create an additional hazard in the bed?).

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I felt like it kept the crib drier, my son tended to sweat a lot and i felt that the terry was more absorbent and dried quicker.

I bought one on a whim and didn't know I'd have a use for it...we actually made a special trip back to that store for more! I also used them for my son's cot in daycare.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I have it and it's great. Fits well and washes well

Stuff like this is funny. Is it necessary? No. But then again 90% of baby gear isn't. A bottle warmer isn't necessary but it makes life a little easier. But different people like different shortcuts. For me, it means my sheets get cleaned more often (I'm terrible with my own bed linens). Changing a traditional fitted sheet isn't difficult by any means but this is a tad easier.

Yes and oxiclean is amazing. I use it on everything and it hasn't failed me once :)

To echo what others have said:

1) I've never had to change sheets in the MOTN (or randomly, for that matter, it was always part of his "scheduled" sheet changes)

2) Our mattress weighs 9.2 lbs (I just looked it up on Amazon) -- my baby was 9.2 lbs by like 2 months. I can easily get him in and out of the crib even now at 25+ lbs... I don't understand the logic of "struggling with the mattress"

3) I don't do what @truthbombs: (and others) recommend, but think it's really smart

4) I like the pattern on my sheets, mainly because I don't have a quilt (or I do and it's up in storage) and I don't do crib rails so it's the only color on the bed other than the crib skirt!

5) I swear by Oxyclean.

I wouldn't pay extra $ for these. I never once have changed a crib sheet in the MOTN, and if I had to, it would take 5 seconds. It's not that big of a deal at all. I did make sure to get a lightweight mattress though, which helps. But, I can't imagine any crib mattress to be that heavy? You an also layer sheets if you find it cumbersome to change - just do mattress pad, sheet, mattress pad, sheet.

Also, once you lower the crib mattress, you won't really be able to reach in far enough anyways to unzip them (at least I wouldn't be able to!)

@pwnstar: I was in a rush this morning heading out to work to reply individually, but yep I'm sold on the multiple changing pads b/c of @Truth Bombs: hack  :ShootingStar: echoed that too!

@Foodnerd81: Good tip on the drying!

@looch: is terrycloth fabric in general good for warm weather clothing and bedding? I remember playing with my mom's lavender terrycloth cloth rompers as a kid and thinking what fun cheesy stuff she had from the 70s. But, the Australian company I bought a bunch of zippered rompers from for baby sold a few terrycloth ones. Australia is hot just like where we live.

In general it doesn't sound like crib changing/ washing happens all that frequently during the week. For some reason I figured every load of kiddie laundry would include a sheet or two. I already bought the bassinet & the extra bassinet sheets for a total of three sheets. The baby will sleep in both the bassinet (night) and crib (daytime naps) during the first 3-6 months.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I have those sheets and I will be the dissenting opinion. I love them!!!! They make sheet changes sooooo easy. I probably wouldn't wash the sheets as often as I do because I'm lazy but it is just too easy. Snotty noses, food that falls out of her sleepers, drool. And god knows what else. I've even been able to change the sheets one handed when she threw up on them. I have one minky and two cotton. They wash really well. I have other cute Aden and Anais gifted crib sheets and I reach for the zip ones every time. I swear I'm not an ad, I just have been really happy with these. I've given them as gifts to friends and they really like them as well.

I don't think we ever had a MOTN change. When he was really little he spent a lot of time in our bed (some of the time in a co-sleeper) and we'd get a lot milk drool. For us, I'd jsut put down a burp cloth and it was fine. I can see if you put the baby in the crib from day one you might be changing sheets more often.

I had seen a tip that recommended you put on two alternating layers of a mattress protector then a sheet (then another mattress protector, then another sheet). Then if anything happened where you needed to change the sheets quick, a clean sheet and mattress pad were right underneath. We did that for months and never needed it, so eventually I stopped.

I'd say get a couple of less expensive sheets and mattress protectors and you can decide later if your baby has enough cause to make $90 sheets worth it.

We had mattress covers like this: http://www.buybuybaby.com/store/product/sealy-reg-stain-protection-crib-mattress-pad-cover/1014976213?categoryId=32005

And my favorite sheets were the Aiden and Anais ones: http://www.buybuybaby.com/store/product/aden-anais-reg-100-cotton-muslin-crib-sheet-in-night-sky/1042121503?categoryId=30501.

Thank you for your comments. As a co-Owner of QuickZip (the company that makes the sheet you are discussing), I wanted to add some additional information to the discussion. While MOTN changes are one benefits to our product, we also see the value in making parent’s life a little bit easier at any time during the day. We’ve heard from our customers that our sheets allowed them to change the crib without struggling with the mattress. Rather than having to lift the mattress out of the crib, you can change the sheet in seconds. Another benefit of our sheets is that it fully surround the mattress, making them safer than traditional crib sheets. Thank you for letting me chime in on your thread.

While I've changed a few sheets in the middle of the night, I think fiddling with a zipper would be way more annoying than ripping the sheet off the mattress and putting on a new one. I have three fitted sheets and one mattress pad (that I hardly ever use anymore) and it has been plenty.

As for sheets, I don't really like white ones because I like a little color in the crib. Two of hers have a white background with pattern on it and one is solid pink.

I have only had to change DD's sheet in the middle of the night one time and honestly, I find changing crib sheets to be super easy. We have three sheets that are white base with a colored pattern on them and I haven't had any issues with them looking fresh and bright.
