My girl is still using hers and she will be 4 in less than 2 months. We switched from the crib to the toddler rail at around 2.5 years. She was fallen out once (I say fallen because I honestly don't think she meant to climb out) and it scared her enough that she never did it again. We switched to the toddler rail while potty training, but could have kept her in the crib part longer.

LO2 will inherit the same crib when we move him out of his mini crib, so our crib is going to get like 7 or 8 years of use.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: 20 months for us...my son started vaulting himself out of his crib instead of going down to sleep. One afternoon, for his nap, he slithered off my lap and put himself into the futon and that was clearly that!

Thanks everyone. Looks like I won't have to worry about a big boy bed alternative for quite sometime. I am dreading the day he gets the bright idea to climb out of his crib or over the baby gates leading up and down our steep stairs.

When ds was 2.25 I turned rhe crib into a toddler bed, but kept the low side pushed up against the wall. I had just had a c section and couldn't lift him out so I would slide the crib and he would hop down. We then flipped it around to a real toddler bed around 2.75 years old. He got a real bed at 3.25. So we got good use out of it. And will probably use it again for baby #3.

We converted the crib to a toddler bed at 2y2mo because he climbed out of it.

We are still using the toddler bed at 3.5yo. Eventually I assume we will buy him a twin. We have been unsuccessfully TTC a second for a year and a half, and when we started that process I figured that we would get him a bed when we needed a crib again for a baby. At some point we may just do it anyway.

Til 4.5 years. And it was smaller than a typical US crib (UK "cot" size). At 5.25 she still sleeps in it sometimes for fun (it's still in her bed set up as a sofa/reading area). We lived in NYC though, so were in no hurry for larger furniture.

L used her crib until 23 months when we swapped to a twin so baby sister could have it. R was in the crib until 25 months when she switched to a twin (bunk beds and sharing a room with big sister) since we were moving. Both transitions went well. Both times there was a reason we needed to move them out, but if there wasn't I probably would have left them in longer.

2.5 year old is in a toddler bed, same crib mattress but different bed because our crib was super cheap and didn't feel so study minus a wall. I hope he will be in that toddler bed until he is ready for a bunk. He's huge, so I am for sure pushing it, but there's not much choice.

we have a mini crib, so its smaller. my daughter moved into a full sized bed at age 25-26 months. we moved her into her new room in her crib, but the bed was set up too. we let her tell us when she was ready. it took about a month or two of being in the room with the bed. she has never gone through a phase of climbing out, and has never fallen out....but she's kind of a rule follower.

@travellingbee: she's in a toddler bed. Since DH and I built her crib it didn't convert. She transitioned really easily, even though we were dreading it. We thought about going straight to a twin but decided to get something lower to the ground. I think we'll keep her in the toddler bed until DD2 learns to climb out of the crib.

She made it 3 years + 1.5 mo in a full normal crib! She got upgraded to a big girl bed (we went right to a platform queen bed-- because we had an extra queen mattress and buying a platform frame only cost us like $120) and the crib is now waiting for 2.0, due in Sept.

DD1 turns 3 in another week and is still in her crib - she's never tried to climb out, sleeps well, and we like knowing she's contained now that we have a newborn as well. I'm guessing we'll had to transition to toddler bed in the next 6 months or so as she's asking to use the bathroom in the middle of the night more often now.
