@78h2o: yes, food is a big one, too! We just haven't gotten to solids, yet :)

@Mrs. Pen: I don't regret getting it, for sure. I feel so much better about him sleeping on it than the hand-me-down one we had at first (though, of course, any new mattress is better than a hand-me-down one).

And I plan on getting him a twin one when we have #2, assuming there's not something better on the market then.

@allison: I feel the same way... I am super frugal about clothes, books, toys, nursery furniture, etc., but when it comes to things I view as affecting her safety - crib mattress, carseat, food - I spend whatever I have to in order to feel comfortable.

We have the LA baby organic mattress. We paid $115 from Costco so it wasn't very expensive.

ETA:: it is $137 on amazon

I got the Nook Pebble for my LO (after a lot of soul-searching because it's $$$). I decided it was worth it because of how much time he spends and will spend on it. And we plan to use it for future LOs, too. So when you think about it that way, it's much easier to stomach a higher price tag. I really believe that I should buy the very best I can when it comes to things that my LO will be in constant contact with. His mattress and car seat were our two biggest splurges!

I wanted the Naturepedic mattress, but it was $$$. I went with an organic crib mattress sold at Costco for about half the price.

We got the Simmons Kids Slumber Time Naturally Mattress at Target (http://www.target.com/p/simmons-kids-slumber-time-naturally-mattress/-/A-13933684#prodSlot=medium_1_2&term=baby+mattress). I did not want a vinyl covering because I didn't like the idea of my babies sleeping on plastic. I would have loved to go fully organic, but price was a consideration for us since we had to buy two. This was a decent price point and 7 months in, I'm totally happy with our purchase!

We also have the Naturepedic one based on the reviews. Honestly, we have so many layers of organic stuff now (mattress pad cover, wool topper, crib sheet), I wonder if the mattress was really as important. But I am okay with the splurge since we'll use it for #2 too.
I'd put whichever mattress you want on your registry. You can always use the completion discount and GC's if it isn't purchased for you. And no one would fault a mom for wanting a healthy bed option for their baby.

We have the same brand as @pelikila and @78h2o, the Moonlight Slumber. We got a different style, the Starlight Support. There like pelikila said, you just wipe down the mattress if there is an accident, no need for a mattress pad.

We have the same one as @78h2o: and have been very happy with it. I love that there are no seams. No need for a mattress pad so if there is an accident, you just wipe it down and throw a new sheet on it.

We got this one: http://www.buybuybaby.com/store/product/lullaby-earth-super-lightweight-baby-crib-toddler-mattress-stage-2/1040063850?categoryId=32004

We ended up buying it ourselves with a coupon since it was kind of expensive, but my thinking was along the lines of Mrs. Bee, in that babies spend a lot of time on the mattress, so let's get a good one.

LO's not here yet but we have this mattress - http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=12939216

It says it's "natural" and it has organic components, but I'm not sure the entire thing is. I liked that is was middle of the road pricing ($199), 2-sided, and didn't have a vinyl cover.

We have an organic one--the naturepedic ultra light 2 stage one. i think Mrs Bee said something in one of her posts like, "They spend 14-15 hours a day on it" so I wanted it to be a good one. I agree with putting it on your registry--people might go in on it together, and you can use the completion discount.

I drove myself insane researching crib mattresses. I ended up going with a more expensive one - The Moonlight Slumber Little Dreamer Dual-Sided Foam Mattress. RightStart had the cheapest price... I think it was 20% off when I got it, because it was around $150. My MIL bought it for us... I felt guilty about asking her to pay for a more expensive mattress, but she's a health nut and she agreed that it was important not to have a lot of chemicals in the mattress given how much time baby spends there. Plus, the dual sided mattress will last through her toddler years. The foam mattresses are much lighter than the coil mattresses, which makes them a lot lighter/easier to lift when changing the bed.

My shower invites are going out soon, so I'm trying to round out my registry. I'm looking for recommendations for crib mattresses! We'd love to go organic, but I'm uncomfortable putting it on the registry since the price is nearly three times a standard mattress. I figure the next best thing is a good, quality mattress from a reputable company and an organic mattress cover. What are the pros and cons of foam vs. innerspring? I'm so lost!
