@Mrs. Goose: we got ours at Walmart (in Canada). It was well rated, has springs, and was double sided (some have specific sides for newborn and toddler, etc- ours was just two sides the same). I think we spent about $80?

@Mrs. Goose: These are the waterproof pads we used between the covered mattress and sheet. They come in different sizes. We did the same thing with them between the PnP sheet and mattress and also used smaller ones as changing pads on top of our changing table. http://m.toysrus.com/skava/static/product.html?type=TRU_product_us&url=%2Fproduct%2Findex.jsp%3FproductId%3D12764109%26skParametric%3Dtrue%26eESource%3DCA_DF%3A12764109%3ATRUS&domain=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.toysrus.com&productId=12764109&skParametric=true&eESource=CA_DF:12764109:TRUS

@Mrs. Goose: we have a foam mattress for DD that isn't waterproof. I recommend a waterproof one! We didn't switch it to the "softer side" until she leaked past our waterproof pad and her normal side needed to dry. She didn't care either way. She uses it in her toddler bed now.

For DS we got him a cheap spring mattress from target? I'm sure Wal-Mart would have worked as well though. It is waterproof and he sleeps great in it.

@Mrs. Goose: the Lullaby Earth is a foam mattress and only weighs 7 lbs. I saw it in the store next to traditional spring mattresses and it is just as firm. The one we got is double water proof because of the breathable cover is waterproof as well as the mattress itself.

We have a waterproof cover and the Sealy and also used a waterproof mattress pad (it sort of feels like flannel on both sides and waterproof in the middle) between the mattress and the fitted sheet, so if the sheets got wet we removed the sheets, pad and wiped down the mattress cover (which didn't get wet) instead of having to take the entire cover off the mattress. But like I said we have rarely used the crib, so those times were few and far between.

@Mrs. Goose: I definitely did not do a ton of research on it, so take that for what it's worth. But my mattress is very firm wth no springs. It does not have a softer toddler side and I wish it did, as C started wanting something softer by about 15 months. We layer a thick blanket under the mattress cover and sheet to make it softer (she's 22 months now). So even though we have only used it as a crib I wish we had a soft side.

We use a waterproof mattress cover and never had an issue, but my kid was never a big spitter upper or heavy leaker, so the number of times we actually used the waterproof-ness is really limited. I would think if you did have a big leak (like when she threw up all over her mattress) you would want to be able to just take the whole thing off and wash it, even if your mattress was waterproof. Make sure the cover can go in the dryer- I bought one at target that you have to air dry by accident. Who has time for that?

@anbanan15: Nuts, the sealy isn't available in Canada anymore.

@Foodnerd81: I thought the springs made it firmer and firmer is better for babies??

If we have our babe in the crib until 2 or so then should we get the double side infant/toddler mattress?

Also, is it better to buy a mattress listed as waterproof instead of putting a waterproof sheet protector on it?

In general get one that is light weight, which will make changing the sheets much easier. Usually that means foam, not springs.

We have one of the Sealy ones that was given to us NIP (I think this one but am not sure? http://mobile.walmart.com/ip/Sealy-Baby-Ultra-Rest-Crib-and-Toddler-Mattress/12662573?type=search). We have had it for two kids, but they co-slept, so I cannot actually comment on the mattress or how it held up. We will be using it for #3.

We just bought a Lullaby Earth for #2, which Walmart also sells. They have a single stage and a 2-stage one. If you wouldn't be using it in a toddler bed, the you could probably get away with the single stage one, which is a little cheaper. We went with this for #2 because it is chemical free and waterproof (we got the Breeze, which Walmart does not have. It has a cooling cover) http://mobile.walmart.com/ip/Lullaby-Earth-Super-Lightweight-Crib-Mattress/43741828?type=search

I have no idea if walmart or sears carries this, but we have this one: http://www.amazon.com/Safety-1st-Heavenly-Dreams-Mattress/dp/B004044LD4/ref=sr_1_1?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1432352938&sr=1-1&keywords=crib+mattress

I figured over 1500 reviews with average 4.5 stars couldn't be wrong. So far, after 12 months, I have no complaints.

I am looking at either walmart or sears for a crib mattress. It will be going in a crib that doesn't convert into a toddler bed, so will only be used there. Any suggestions for a good brand? And is there anything I should look to have / not have?
