It is softer on one side for a toddler and harder on the other for an infant. We didn't have to buy any extra mattress covers or pads to protect it - if LO has a blowout or spit up incident, we just take off the sheet and wipe down the mattress. To me, it seems like it will last and stay clean for multiple kiddos. I had completely forgotten to research mattresses and when we bought our crib they recommended it (I'm sure because it was the most expensive) but we went with it and I'm really glad we did.
