@RonjaL7: Yah I might just keep it for that to not have to bother with lining up and returning it... luckily only cost 10 bucks!

@Goldengirl: of course it is totally up to you, but for diaper changes and things where you are watching the baby something that is non-breathable would be fine.

@RonjaL7: I bought one of these which I thought would do the job and could be multi-purpose http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/40143304/
But then I read the description where it says non-breathable and don't put under baby's head... and that freaked me out so now I think I should take it back!

@Goldengirl: ah yes my mattress itself is covered in a non removable plastic material. If yours has an additional layer I wouldn't bother.

I did use a crib mattress protector for a lot of things though like laying the baby on my bed for night changes when they were still in my room. Or when laying them on the floor or couch if they spit up a lot.

@GreenThumb: True! So maybe I'll just get one and call it a day. Although I still don't know how to decide between so many mattress options... every day a new decision!

@Goldengirl: I think the thing is in the middle of the night, even if those are removable, you are just going to want to change the bed quick and go back to sleep. So maybe if you remove the cover that's normally on there, you might want a back up while it is in the wash?

@GreenThumb: The ones I posted all seem to have water-resistant removable covers that go in the washer... that's where my confusion is, if I still need a cover in addition!

None seem to be completely "waterproof" but I think it needs to have a plastic/vinyl surface in order to really achieve that, which I'm hoping to avoid.

We did layer a waterproof mattress pad and sheet over our waterproof crib mattress. I could just pull both of them off if there was an accident and put new on without having to think about wiping down the mattress before replacing the sheet. Worked for us especially since we knew we wanted to use the mattress again for LO#2. I'm not a germ freak but it seemed a little more sanitary to be able to throw them in the washer.

@KayKay: Haha yes it seems so! That's good to know though, I just don't want to buy more things than I need and if the cover I'd buy is the exact same type of thing as the cover that's already on the mattress, I just don't know why I'd need it.

@goldengirl: In 4.5y, i have never put anything other than one crib sheet on our crib mattress. It does have a non-removeable waterproof cover. Apparently I'm the minority :)

@Goldengirl: our mattress did not come with a separate cover but it was still waterproof (could easily be wiped down). I had a cover for it but never really used it unless I doubled up on sheets like @RonjaL7: suggested.

@RonjaL7: So the protector pads are needed even though they all come with removable water-resistant covers? And that doesn't make it too bulky?

I think all crib mattresses are "waterproof" but everyone tends to add a waterproof pad under the sheet as well for extra protection.

Don't forget to make the bed twice (protector, sheet, protector, sheet). That was the best advice ever for middle of the night sheet changes!

And after more browsing... Here is another one from the same brand:
http://www.toysrus.ca/product/index.jsp?productId=3943349

Still confused if I need to get a mattress protector/cover with any of these! Anyone know??

I'm looking at these 2 mattresses and trying to decide between:
Safety 1st Peaceful Lullabies https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B004044L98
Safety 1st Grow With Me 2-in-1
https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B004049LT8

The Peaceful Lullabies version is more expensive due to being filled with cotton and wool and having a bamboo cover. The other is less natural materials but still non-toxic, free of PVC/phthalates.

They both have the removable cover for washing. But it seems like many people add waterproof mattress protectors (not necessarily with these mattresses, just what I've noticed in general).... is that still necessary with mattresses that already have a cover? Did you buy a separate protector to put around yours? Because I'm thinking in that case, if I did that, what does it matter what cover is beneath the cover I put on top (i.e. why wouldn't I just buy the cheaper one since I'm covering it up anyway?).
