We used a breathable mesh bumper just so her arms/legs wouldn't get stuck.

any chance you could put her in a pack and play for a few days while she figures out the rolling? The mesh sides wouldn't hurt at all and completely breathable. Otherwise, the mesh bumpers really aren't that expensive. I never had that issue with my older one and the baby is still in a pack and play so I don't have any experience.

I think she is too old for swaddling and too mobile for swaddling & bumpers. I'm really surprised that you feel the rolling is what is waking her up. Does she keep the paci in as she rolls, or is it maybe falling out and causing the waking? My LO has been rolling around in the crib for about 2 months now and I don't think it has affected his sleep at all. Hopefully she will just get used to this and continue sleeping despite changing position....

Also, do you ever nurse during night or give a bottle? LO started sleeping so much better once we night weaned. It was as if his body decided to stop waking up, if there was no milk.

@Mrs D: I've had the mesh bumpers in his crib since he started rolling around. My ped said the only unsafe thing about the mesh bumpers is that when they can stand they can potentially use it as a "boost" to step on and get out of the crib. So when he could do that I took the front one out and left the back one which is against the wall (and that side of the railing is also a lot taller).
He's two now, obviously doesn't need a bumper. But I like that it keeps his binky and lovey from falling out. :-) That also decreased chance of waking at night.

@Adira: this. She'all figure it out eventually! I don't think bumpers will help (and can pose a risk), and swaddling is just delaying (and also risky).

Do you have a breathable bumper? I was ok with that when they rolled but not a traditional bumper.

What about those bumpers that wrap around each slat in the crib, are those a no no?

Thanks ladies! I think we'll ride it out for a bit and see if it gets better...I just feel bad if it ends up like DD1 who went weeks on little sleep bc of it!!!

I am firmly opposed to bumpers so I personally wouldn't do that. Neither boy woke themselves up bumping into anything, just would roll over and wake themselves up by being less comfortable I guess. So bumpers wouldn't have helped anyway. I think a sleep sack or a zipadeezip would be fine but I don't know what exactly that would help... I guess we just let them figure it out. Sorry I don't have a better solution...

@avivoca: I remember with DD1 she never stopped rolling, it went on for 2-3 weeks and I finally put the bumpers back in. Thankfully it all turned out ok - but until the last time we had her in her crib she was still all over the place like a crazy sleeper. The only good thing with DD2 is that when I swaddle her she doesnt seem to try to roll at all...

ugh...

We just let them be - no bumper, no swaddle, no nothing. They eventually get used to it and stop waking themselves up so much!

I think this is when I started putting him in a zipadeezip. He could roll around in it but it sort of gave him that swaddle sensation but slightly safer. I wouldn't worry about the bonking of her head. I never had bumpers, the mom police scared me too much about using them. :silly:

I let her roll around without swaddling/bumpers. It really was only a couple of nights of rough sleep. But if she's rolling, I wouldn't swaddle at all.

So...DD is 6.5 Months. She is great with head control and just started rolling like crazy. When I went back to work around 4 mos I started giving her formula before bed and got some nice stretches of sleep out of her. Nothing has been consistent though.

Heres where we are. Current schedule is 2-3-4 on weekends....weekdays are hard because he naps at daycare are few and short (just too much noise I think). She is generally happy thought. 9:30am Bottle (5oz); Noon Cereal and Fruit/Veg; 2:30pm bottle (5oz); 4:30 Cereal Veg/Fruit; 7-8pm bottle (formula - she takes sometimes 4oz sometimes 7oz). The morning is unpredictable. Sometimes she nurses at 5am, sometimes at 7am. Her weight gain has been good (7lbs3oz at birth; 16lbs 1oz at 6mos).

She likes to sleep on her side and back. She occasionally will get on to her tummy and be ok but usually she does not like it. Right now - the main reason I have to go into her room is a lost binky. She cant quite find it - she can put it in if she does find it. We leave three in the crib just in case! ;)

This weekend she started rolling like a mad woman - and therefore is not bumping all over her crib and waking herself up. Last night this went on from midnight until 4am. At 4am I finally swaddled her (she is in a halo - I usually just wrap her tummy, no arms) and she passed right out.

Question is...do I put the bumpers back in her crib (I removed them when she started to "move around" in her crib) to prevent the bumping/waking up. Or do I swaddle her arms. Or do I do nothing? There are no-no's to all situations....I'm feeling at a loss...
