We went the toddler bed route and our reasoning was this: our crib was super expensive so we handed that down to DS2. We definitely weren't going to buy another crib if we didn't have to. So even though it converted, it was cheaper to buy a toddler bed rather than another crib. Then, the choice was toddler bed vs big bed. The toddler bed was $100, but we signed up for an amazon card, which had a cash back for signing up for the cc. The bed ended up costing $30, and we reused his mattress (bought new mattress for new baby), and could reuse his crib sheets on a toddler bed. Even though we will only get another year or so of use out of it, it saved us enough money that we needed to spend on the new baby.

I'm using my 3.5 year old's crib as a daybed, and plan to do so until she's definitely too big for it. We transitioned from a crib a bit after she turned 3, and I plan to go the same route for DD2, who is 20 months and will probably want to come out of the crib much sooner (although I'm much more reluctant to take her out because she's quite the explorer).

One big motivational factor for NOT getting a "real" bed is the size - having a cozy little daybed leaves lots more space for playing in the girls' room (they share).

@Bao: We are not going to make the transition until absolutely necessary. I figure... if he's sleeping well in the crib, why mess with a good thing. Depending on how long he lasts, we'll see what size makes sense.

We'll transition her to a twin bed. She rolls a lot in her sleep so I think she'll need more room when there are no bars. Also I want the option of sleeping with her in her bed when she doesn't feel well or something.

We transitioned her crib to toddler bed for like 2 months but she would be sleep terribly. It was too easy to climb out. After two months, we moved and transitioned to a new room and a full sized bed. I don't know if she was just older, but it went much more smoothly and she sleeps fine. I did not get a rail (I'm cheap) but we stuffed both sides with pool noodles and extra pillows so she didn't have a problem. She's also not a big mover when she sleeps.

We're going to use a toddler bed. Even though our crib converts, it's more cost effective to reuse it as a crib for our next LO and get a cheap toddler bed for T. Also his room is really small so it will work better.

Once we move into our bigger house in a year or so we'll get him a new bedroom suite with a twin or full sized bed.

We moved her from her crib to a full sized mattress on the floor. We love the space we have if she needs us to lay beside her and we didn't want to transition the bed because we knew we were having another LO soon after she switched anyway. She loves it and we didn't pay too much, we actually just bought one off the floor at a furniture store so it was discounted.

@lamariniere: we debated and debated and have decided to buy a toddler bed because 1) LO will be about 21 months when we transition him to free up the crib for little brother who will be born a few months later, and since he is small want something low to ground, 2) we are in a townhouse that we have about 4 year plan to stay in and the kids rooms are SMALL, so we will wait to buy full size beds when we move and the kids are around 5 and 3.

We did a toddler bed. We liked that ours was lower to the ground than a twin and saves her some space for playing in her room. We have this one: http://www.amazon.com/KidKraft-86921-Modern-Toddler-Bed/dp/B001772QYI

We didn't need the crib for anything since we had already bought one for DS2. We just took the side off and put the rail up for DS1 so that it wouldn't be too big of a change. It was a really easy transition that way. We figured that we will get the rails and turn it into a full size bed at some point but there was no reason for us not to start with the toddler bed.

@Bao: that's good then! I've seen beds marketed as toddler beds (not converted from a crib) and I just don't get the appeal.

We went with a twin because we needed the crib for LO2. Our twin is long, so he could probably sleep in it until he leaves home. I feel like a toddler bed is a waste of money since they are so short. We went for a twin out of space concerns, both of our LOs have relatively small bedrooms.

When you transitioned your LO out of the crib, did you move them to a toddler bed first, or straight in a bigger bed?

We are looking to transition LO2 in the next few months. Her 2nd birthday is coming up and we thought we would ask for stuff for her big girl bed. My parents are good about chipping in for stuff like that, which helps. But I wasn't sure if we should plan to just take her crib rail off first, and see how that goes, and then transition to a twin once we buy it or if it doesn't really make a difference either way? What did you do, and why?
