@meadow: thanks for the update! I think I'm more concerned about naps than night time to a point too. On the other hand, she naps on a cot at daycare and on the floor or spare bed at my parents, so I feel like it may be ok...

On the night training aspect, I forgot to put a pull up on her a few nights ago and she woke up dry lol so she's obviously ready...

I don't think you need to be so concerned! With both of my boys it wasn't really a big deal at all. My first was fine, and he even stayed in his room the first few weeks until he realized he could walk out himself.

My second has been in a bed for A YEAR (he's 3.5 now), and still waits for us to come and get him, haha.

I know I've been lucky, but I also wasn't really concerned about it - I wouldn't overthink it.

@JennyLayneAZ: So its not awful. The first bedtime was great...they stayed in their beds, chatted, wiggled around a bit, then went to sleep. The next morning, my daughter even asked permission to get out of bed. Nap that day was a completely different animal. They were out of control maniacs. There were bouncing off the beds, jumping, flying, catapulting it felt like total chaos. There were some injuries (unfortunately, that is how my son learns his physical boundaries) - but none that needed so much as a bandaid. There was no nap that day. Since then, I have been able to manage by letting them play for a bit first, then coming in and sitting on the side of the room and knitting until they fall asleep. I am sure most of their crazy is the twin factor --- having your BFF in the same room = party time.

Good luck with your daughter...night trained would be so AWESOME!

I hope that it goes great!

We switched DS1 at 2 years 9 months. DH came home a bit early and set up how bed. I picked up DS from daycare and we showed him when we got home. He used his crib mattress for the first couple months until I bought a twin mattress. For the first few weeks he didn’t get out of his bed and would call for us when he woke up. We have more problems now at 6 keeping him in bed than we did then.

Following, and also wishing you luck @meadow: ! DD is 3 (April baby) and still in the crib. I want to switch her to a bed so we can night train (she is completely potty trained during the day). I *think* she is peeing in the pull up before going to sleep and I know she goes after she wakes up. But other than that, I don't think she's peeing while she's asleep....so, its time. But bedtime has been a bit of a nightmare lately, shes been going through some separation anxiety, and aside from leaving (at daycare, grandma care, etc) being difficult, bedtime has been tough too. So, come back after the weekend and let us know how it goes :)

LO was around when we took the side off her crib and put the toddler rail on. Then she was able to lay in it and get used to it during that day before bedtime.

It was a super smooth transition, and she kept her crib mentality and basically didn't get out and just called for us if she needed anything. We also transitioned later, only after she climbed out for the first time. Even now, years later in a 'big' bed at 6.5 yo she will often just call for us rather than getting out of bed!

Best of luck :)

We just moved my son from his crib to a twin bed. He'll be three next month. He never really tried to climb out, but my daughter is almost four months old, and we didn't want to buy a new crib for her. Anyway, what we did was we hyped up that he would be getting his new "big boy bed" for a few days, but we basically didn't build it in his room until the end of the day. He was in the room while my husband put it together, and then we put him to bed in it pretty much right after. If it's any comfort, the transition has been very smooth. He doesn't get out in the middle of the night or anything. In fact, he hasn't really left his room at all. He will actually knock on the door from the inside and call for us if he wants to come out, even though he is totally capable of opening his own door lol.

I just switched my 29 mos old and we did it in the middle of the day and he was with us and was sooo excited. He and his big sis played in it for a bit... then they moved on. And bedtime was the first time I put him to sleep in it. I'd show him before hand again. I think if he was surprised by it at bedtime it would have gotten him all amped up and excited.

I switched both my kids by 22 months because of a new baby, but I set up their big bed about a week before they got to go into it so they were used to seeing it and climbing onto it for stories and stuff. They just went into a twin bed. I definitely wouldn’t spring it on them right at bedtime.

Also, I did bedtime in it as their first sleeping experience, not a nap and I think that helped. Because they’re older I think you won’t have too much of a problem because you can explain it to them.

Honestly, both times it went way better than I expected and I had no issues. My first kid stopped napping at 2.5 but would lie on her bed for quiet time. My second kid is only 2 so definitely still needs the nap and takes it easily.

I’d say you’re only in for 1-2 weeks of a potentially rough transition, if that. Maybe give them a special stuffed animal they can only have if they stay in their beds? I know that’s a big perk for my kids, they get to have 5+ stuffed animals in their bed and choose which ones they cuddle up at the top near their pillow each night.

Good luck! :)

@SweetiePie: Neither has gotten 100% of the way out....but they have thrown a leg over and sat on the bar. At that point I bolt in and redirect.

In December(ish) we took the metal spring part out of the cribs and their mattresses have been on the floor within the walls of the cribs. So I can't lower anything more....We were happy to get the extra months of maturity - but now it is an absolute safety hazard.

I am absolutely terrified.....but on Saturday afternoon my DH and I are going to convert the twins' cribs into toddler beds. (DD and DS are 3yo)

There are 8 million variables and so many things are going to go wrong.....how long will they goof off at night..... are naps going to be completely over in 3 days even though I know developmentally the kids still need them? Just so many thoughts...

My question for HB is this.....(yes, I know this sounds silly, but I just need to crowd source this one....)

Did you "unveil" the bed at bedtime or before?
[I mean nothing fancy by this ... like literally, should I walk them into the room before dinner and show them... or wait until teeth are brushed/PJs on and we walk in for bedtime story....]

Part of me thinks it would be good to digest the change before the bedtime routine and part of me thinks it will give them time to play and think of their new bed as a play space....
