@Foodnerd81: we actually ended up making the switch on Friday with no rails, etc. I did lay her crib mattress on the floor so that she would land on that if she fell. She hasn't come close to falling yet. It's made me realize that most of the movement in her crib was while she was playing rather than not sleeping.

I hope the move goes well for you guys!

I think we are making the switch soon. I'm borrowing a few rails this weekend but sleep has been so terrible I just put a pool noodle under the side near the window and a rolled up towel on the open side. DH was sleeping in the bed with her last night and she rolled into the window and it scared her (closed and locked of course). Hence the rolls on both sides.

Right now we have a queen bed on box spring and bed frame. I think if we just take the bed frame out its low enough. And I probably will put the actual mesh rail at least on the window side. Like @matador84: we lay in bed to read books and sing before bed.

I guess I'll report back once we let her sleep in the bed by herself!

Switched to a twin at 15 months. She fell out the first night (bunk beds and the bottom bunk is less than a foot off the ground, so not a big deal), but that was the one and only time. For a couple months we put little pillows along the open side of the bed, but we don't even do that anymore.

I am so glad we don't have a rail. It is really nice to be able to sit on her bed and read books. And lay down and snuggle before bedtime.

The first night we switched to a toddler bed, he fell out within 5 minutes of falling asleep. So... Now we have a rail. I think he just moves a lot.

We didn't use a rail when we switched to a twin. DS's bed is very low though, about a foot off of the ground, so I wasn't too worried. The first week I actually put his crib mattress on the floor next to the bed and he fell out the first two nights, but that's it!

@rattles: This gives me hope! I think she'll be ok but it makes me nervous that almost everyone seems to have used something. Obviously if she falls out it's not the end of the world but I'd feel bad.

We switched to a twin at 2, and we've never had rails and never had a fall, fingers crossed!

D wiggles a TON in bed, so I just picked up a couple of pool noodles at the dollar store. We're planning to take the front off the crib this weekend (it's gonig to be too hard for me to bend over the crib rail to pick him up soon).

We didn't. I bought one but DH and I like to crawl in bed with DS to read books and it was a pain so we never used it. He's maybe fallen out once I can think of during nap and he actually stayed asleep. It's not a far fall like it would be from a box spring and mattress.

We rolled up towels and put it under the fitted sheet, so something similar to the pool noodle / magic bumper idea. It worked well for us.

Good luck!

We used "magic bumpers" along the open side (same concept as a pool noodle; placed under the sheet). It worked well and we removed it after a few months as she didn't seem to need it.

We don't use anything but mostly because she's in a queen sized bed. But I would say even in a smaller bed she would t need it because she doesn't move much. The rail would be more for my peace of mind.

No rail here...I was worried about him falling out because he moves around ALOT when he is asleep...but he hasnt even fallen out once while asleep and only twice when awake...and it was because he was playing and being a little crazy ;-)

We used a pool noodle under his sheet. The bed that we got for him didn't work with a traditional bed rail. He's fallen off maybe a handful of times onto a rug with a huge stuffed animal that we have against his bed as a "cushion." Never been an issue for us really :)

We're moving M from her crib to a twin bed soon. She's 2.5 years. I was assuming that we would need a rail of some kind, but DH thinks it's nuts. She does move around in her crib a lot, but I think only while she's awake. If she's sleeping she seems to keep her head on the pillow.

It would be pretty far to fall though!
