@Coco Bee: I didn't go based on dimensions of the crib. There was a paper in the box that said use a minimum of X inches each way (basically, standard size mattress..the 27.25 x 57.25 or whatever the heck it is, lol). I measured the mattress at the store with my handy measuring tape (LOL) and it was actually a smidge larger than the information said it was "supposed" to measure (in the mattress' information on the target website). So..I just brought it home and tried it. I figured worst case I'd have to go back and exchange but that at least I'd know :)

@joyjoy: yeah I was trying to tell from the pictures if the thickness of the wood is really that different. I wouldn't think it is, but I guess if most standard mattresses fit, like @Mrsbells said, then I should be worried?

@plantains: yeah that's a good idea.

Most cribs are measured on the outside. Standard mattress should fit. If you are worried, you could always do what we did. We bought the crib first and waited until it arrived to double check the interior dimensions so we could get a mattress. You can also try calling the crib manufacturer to see if they will give you minimum dimensions for a mattress.

The interior of most cribs is the same standard size but some are bigger on the outside depending on the style. Pretty much all the cribs and mattresses I looked at were the same size

@coco bee: I'm looking at the Modena, too, and one of the questions on the page asked about the size of the crib. A couple customers commented that it fit their 52 x 27.5 mattress. Maybe some cribs are measured from the outside instead of the actual space where the mattress would go? Then there would be a bit of difference in the measurement due to the thickness of the wood.

@Coco Bee: Here's ours:
crib- 57 x 30.1 x 43.5 inches
mattress- 51.6 x 27.2 x 5 inches

It fits very snugly. I have a hard time getting it in and out to change the sheet, even.

@joyjoy: @zippylef: @MsLipGloss: It's not always the case.
Here is one crib we like: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Baby-Mod-Dakota-4-in-1-Fixed-Side-Convertible-Crib-White/19498819
note the dimensions are 54.6 x 34.5
The dimensions for the other crib we like is 53.8 x 29.75 (http://www.walmart.com/ip/Baby-Mod-Modena-3-in-1-Fixed-Side-Convertible-Crib-White/15529737#Specifications) That is nearly 5 inches of a difference! Like @mamabolt: said, there is a safety risk if there is a gap.
And the mattress we like is from costco and is 52 x 27.5 - which is still a two inch difference from even the smaller crib!!

I'm not really sure what to do about it :-/

I stressed so badly about this! The reviews for our crib (Babi Italia Hamilton) had miserable parents commenting about how it was "so large" that you couldn't use a standard mattress.

Well cue the panic! We can't afford a $400 deluxe super supreme mattress. I just decided to wing it. I bought a "standard" mattress at Target (Simmons Kids Naturally soyfoam) and it fit just fine :)

I had no idea about this, but my MIL discovered it while reading amazon reviews and made me insane about it. I think there can be a little variation in both the size of the crib and the size of the mattress, and unfortunately that can be a safety risk if you end up with a gap. I ultimately couldn't deal with her obsession with it (and she was ordering our crib/mattress) so I told DH to deal with it and the crib and mattress that showed up fit together tightly!

I agree wtih @JoyJoy and @Zippylef - I thought there was a standard size and that the mattress sizes were standard, too. I certainly didn't measure our crib/mattress, and they fit together well.

I was under the impression that it was all standard. We didn't even check sizes before we bought ours and it fits. The mattress does measure a little larger though, I think. They are supposed to fit very snugly so little hands and feet can't get between the crib side and mattress.

Maybe it's just the cribs and mattresses that I've been looking at, but I'm not finding this to be the case. Most cribs and mattresses I've seen have been within half an inch of 52" x 28". Are the dimensions you're seeing very far off or just a little bit?

I am looking to buy a crib and mattress - but every crib I see is a different size! How were you able to find a crib and a mattress that were the same size?

We found a mattress we like at costco, but now we have to find a crib that fits the same dimensions - what a pain! Why aren't they all made the same size?!
