@shopaholic: yes I'm asian but while I've heard lots of old wives tales from my parents and in-laws, the whole looking at lights thing was never brought up. They would kind of brag about how much the babies liked looking at lights. Someone would point out "oh, she's looking at the lamp" and they'd immediately say "oh yes she LOVES looking at lights. Wherever we go, if there's a light, she has to look at it." Weird. Haha.

I think they all just look for things to fuss about... because they love the babies so much ;)

I was born cross eyed. It is usually genetic. I wouldnt worry about it if you don't have a history of it in your family.

My LO looked cross eyed until about two months. Once she learned to focus better it stopped. It freaked me out for a while though!

@SAHM0811: @sunny: OK, glad my families are not the only paranoid ones!

@shopaholic: Um...having amblyopia myself (not the cross/lazy eye form but a difference in how each eye sees), I can assure you those are old wives tales! If you really are concerned you can have her vision checked when she gets older. But no, making her NOT look at things will do zero to prevent amblyopia.

@shopaholic: yes I'm Asian. I totally remember my mom saying that I should help my brothers (when they were infants) move their focus around so they wouldn't be cross eyed!

Our LO looked cross eyed a lot at the beginning. I remember (secretly) beig terrified. It went away; I can't even remember when.
I went to see a friend's baby 3 days ago at the hospital & in the photo we took, she looks cross eyed too. I can't post te pic obviously because its her child, but I think newborns just have focus issues so they look to us as cross eyed.

I think babies are normally a little cross-eyed at times for the first year or so. At our 9 month appt, our ped was a little concerned it was more than usual, so he sent us to a pediatric ophthamologist just in case. She was fine!

I do think the older generation tends to get caught up on stuff like this! I can totally relate to hearing the same comments from grandparents, aunts, etc!!

@mrs. wagon: @sunny: so you both are Asian too right? And you never got this paranoia from your moms and grandmas? I don't see what the big concern is bc no one in our family is cross eyed!

my baby would cross her eyes alot when she was really little. i think until she was about 2 months. the dr said it was normal though since they're still learning how to focus their eyes. now its not an issue. but i think if they still do it when they're older they have to wear an eye patch to help straighten them.

I think my LO looked a little cross eyed at 4 weeks but she outgrew it. I think tiny babies just have trouble focusing sometimes.

My babies both STARED at lights like nothing else and neither of them are cross-eyed!

From what I hear from parents of kids with crossed or lazy eyes, it's totally a physiological thing. And like you said, what are you supposed to do, hold her eyeballs?? Or stop her from looking at things??? As young as she is, I'm pretty sure there's nothing you can do to prevent it!

My whole life all the grown women in my life seem paranoid that every baby would turn cross-eyed. I've always heard "don't let them stare at the light!" Over and over. It's been drilled in my head so much that we basically keep all overhead lights off every night so K won't stare at them. Of course I've gotten this advice countless times since she was born. Sent my mom a pic of k last night and got a reply saying I need to watch her eye focus, she's looking in the middle too much. Gah!!
I was snarky and said I couldn't hold her eyeballs. What can I do?!

But really.. What CAN you do so they don't look cross eyed? Is it such a valid concern?
