@TurtleDoves: Yaaay, that would be awesome!!! We don't do a ton of situps so that's easy to avoid. Today was some running which made me a little queasy. I want to wait to tell the coaches for a little bit but I don't want them trying to push me to my max either. I'm just gonna wait and see how I feel...

@Lozza: We have those machines but never use them (at least not in the month I've been going, LOL!). The owner has been focusing on tempo training and now cluster training, specifically with squats.

@JoJoGirl: Thanks!! I just wanted to get back into shape and I knew I couldn't start anything new when pregnant. So looks like I started just in time! I'm going to my doctor Thursday for a blood test confirmation (it's still not real!) and I think I'm going to have to say something not long after. I want to wait until 6 weeks but today's run had me a bit queasy. =/

@hellobeeboston: Just found out yesterday!!! It doesn't even feel real yet! I'm going Thursday for a blood test confirmation and hope I don't run into my usual doctor. She's probably going to think I"m nuts, LOL!

First, congrats!

Second, I had a similar experience.. I joined CF partially to distract from TTC, then got my BFP my second week there.

I would DEFINITELY tell your coaches sooner rather than later. You do need to be aware of your HR during HIIT (mine often spiked to 175, which is not really okay to go that anaerobic when pregnant). CF coaches definitely want to encourage you to push push push harder, and they NEED to know not to do that with you now. My coach was like the 3rd person to know I was pregnant after HB and DH. :)

@LindsayInNY: Situps in general are fine until into the second trimester (I was comfortable doing them till probably 24 weeks), the only thing that crossfitmom.com recommends cutting out early are situps on the GHD machine, which is a very different thing (those are explosive, full range of motion type exercises that rarely come up in workouts).

@LindsayInNY: Hey, congrats:) I am TTC this month so we might be due date month buddies;)

I'd continue with it and applaud you! I am doing HIIT training and have no intention of quitting. As far as sit-ups and back-to-floor work goes, it isn't a problem until 20w and by then you will be telling people anyways. As PP said, do what you can and what feels right and modify when you need to!

I did crossfit with both my first kid and my second, and both times I've told the coach around 6 weeks because that's when I started feeling bad. I didn't need any modifications at that point- I think maybe I stopped doing GHD situps early (i.e. first trimester), but in general I could do all the workouts without substitutions well into the second trimester. Mainly, I wanted the coach to know because it meant that I wasn't willing to go all out, and I didn't want the coach constantly telling me to up my weight or work harder when I knew I needed to cap my intensity well before I got to the point of not being able to breathe or feeling faint or dizzy or anything. If you just let your coach know that you don't want it made public, especially in front of your coworker, that shouldn't be a problem.
Also, congrats :)

@blackbird: Ironically, I'm sick right now! The clothing is a definite worry. Especially since I go with a coworker! I wear a lot of form-fitting tank tops so I might need to switch to t-shirts if it becomes noticeable...

We don't want to tell family until the 12 week mark which will be early November. We'll be with my family over Thanksgiving but won't see DH's family until Christmas. I would really like to tell his family in person since they'll be more excited than my own so I might see if there are cheap flights for a quick weekend. I think Christmas is a bit of a stretch to wait and I don't want others knowing before they do (coworkers, etc.)

@Revel: There are a bunch of different coaches. I usually take a lunchtime class with the owner. He's male but very educated so I would think he would know modifications. If not, I think I'll email the pregnant coach to ask. I'm planning on going in with my own research/knowledge of what to do/not do so I don't have to rely on anyone else. I don't think this location has had many pregnant people which just motivates me more! I think I'm going to wait to say something until I'm further along and/or start feeling the need to (if I get winded, etc.).

You're probably fine for a few weeks but you'll want to cut back. You can just make up excuses...you're sick, you hurt something, you're getting over something, yadda yadda.

Depending on what you wear to the gym, it may get more obvious. A LOT of people at my gym were asking my coach about me before I hit 12 weeks, hehe....

@blackbird: Thank you!! I know, right?! I called this morning and was asked if my insurance or info changed... I said, not since last Wednesday, LOL! One of the coaches is 7 months with #2 and CF'd until 38 weeks with #1. I know I can definitely reach out to her once I'm further along. I just don't want to say anything so soon because I'm still new at it and also because I'm going with a coworker. I'm fearful it'll somehow slip out by a coach or she'll question why I'm modifying everything =/ I think early on I'm safe doing most things. I can also check the WOD ahead of time which helps too. Right now I feel totally normal (knock on wood) so just plan on listening to my body...

Congrats! I missed this thread before but I did CF up through 39 weeks. I didn't modify much in the beginning, just took care to not get too winded or hot. My coaches had experience training lots of pregnant women so they were very prepared to modify with me. Because your coach is pregnant, they'll probably have good ideas for you. The crossfit mom website is also really useful.

I told my coaches right away because I had a competition coming up and was unsure about competing (I ended up doing it and am very glad I did!). I know other women that have waited the twelve weeks.

@evansjamie: Not sure what their policy is... One of the coaches is currently 7 months pregnant with #2 and went to 38 weeks with #1. I had a class with her on Friday. I see my doctor on Thursday so maybe I'll ask for a note then, just in case the gym wants one? I know some of the Barre classes require notes if you're a current student but won't let you go if you're a new student. I was looking online for info on modifications. I think it's still so early that there isn't much I need to modify yet. Luckily the gym posts workouts a day in advance so I know what to expect.

@LindsayInNY: What's the policy of your CrossFit gym? My story is very similar to yours: 1 month in to my Barre Bootcamp, I got my :bfp: , but I needed clearance from my doctor to continue. You might want to check into any modifications you might have to make per your coach.

I'm nearing the one month mark of CrossFit (including the OnRamp). And, low and behold, yesterday finally brought a :bfp: ! How long until I need to tell the coaches that I'm pregnant? As of right now, I feel totally fine (except for being sick!). I have a doctor's appointment on Thursday to confirm with a blood test. I don't want to tell *too soon* but when necessary?

Just wanted to chime in quickly. I started a new, way more intense exercise regimen two months before TTC and this impacted my menstrual cycle drastically. I've always been really active and exercise is a part of my daily regimen, however, the increased intensity exercise made my cycles much longer. My cycles had always been 28-30 days for years and as soon as I changed my workout regimen to be much more intense, my cycles increased to 40+ days. It's different for everyone but just wanted to throw that out there!

@Lozza: Thank you for this comment!! We have a couple different CF gyms nearby and they all have a different approach to things (based on the websites). The one I'm going to recently started focusing more on form over weight, quality over quantity. That was really what sold me. I was very hesitant before because it seems like more focus is put on weight than form (I'm all for heavy lifting, as long as the form is still there!). I think the nervousness is simply that I don't know what to expect. I know a lot about CF but yet not at the same time. I know this gym has at least 2 female coaches. I don't know if either have been pregnant but I'm hoping they know have experience with pregnant CFers (or are willing to learn!). They have a kids program so that's a little more reassuring that they would at least learn. I'll let you know how it goes!! And thank you again for that comment - it was really helpful!

@LindsayInNY: On Ramp is a really nice way to meet other people in the same boat, and you'll stay friendly with them as you move from the on ramp into normal classes. I've worked out at several CrossFit gyms, and while not everyone is necessarily an extrovert-friendly type, if you make overtures or ask questions or for help, I've always found that even the quietest or most stoic or most serious of CrossFitters are more than happy to help.
I've pregnant-CrossFitted twice, and I've always told my coach really early, like 6 weeks when my symptoms have started. I'm actually almost 31 weeks pregnant now and just got back from a CrossFit class :)
My coach is VERY focused on form, and very cool about scaling back weights till you've got the form correct. I think it depends on the gym- some coaches are more into "form comes first" while others really push intensity sometimes at the expense of form, so I generally like to try out intro sessions at a few gyms before committing.
(My coach was also great during pregnancy- his wife, also Level 1 CrossFit certified, had given birth about 3 months before I got pregnant, and there were two other pregnant women at the gym when I joined, so he'd really worked hard on his own, with his wife, and with a local physical therapist on what was safest and most helpful during pregnancy- if that's a concern for you, you can always ask your coach at some point if s/he has had experience working with pregnant crossfitters)
