Yep lol, 140 bpm is like a fast walk. And my doctor told me not to lift more than 40lb. In one ear, out the other

@blackbird: Oh yeah, I'm totally not on board with the 140 bpm nonsense! Is that even possible with the extra blood volume? I feel like the tiniest bit of exertion would get me there! I am a fan of the 15# balls, but we seem to be running low on them lately, so more often than not I end up with the 10# balls too!

@JoJoGirl: It was max time, not max weight and I think it was only a 20# plate. I've been so crappy at most other things lately that I was determined to stick that one out! Good for you for sticking with CF even though you only started just before your BFP. That is awesome!

Man, you ladies are beasts!! @blackbird: You were doing ball slams with a 20# ball?? And @hergreenapples: You WON? Was it max weight or max time? Either way, that is so awesome :-)

I started Crossfitting 6 days before my BFP (derp derp) in September so I'm still on the new side to it :)

Oh yeah, I always downscale those. We don't do a bunch of those at my gym, though...lately the focus has been on strength work. But i remind myself that a little out of breath isn't a big deal (ie i don't listen to the under 140 bpm rule for my heart rate, but like jojo, i aim for about 175 or so) because of the extra blood vessels. I've had to drop from 20 pounds to about 10 pounds for ball slams, otherwise they beat the crap out of me!

@blackbird: Wow - that is very cool. Our bodies are pretty amazing things!

Still important for us to get oxygen though so that it can get to the baby:) I'm thinking of hardcore metcons that leave no time for breathing. I think we recently did 7x7 burpees and 7x7 ball slams or wall balls (can't remember) and while I normally would go all out, I had to sit out a couple of the sets of ball slams in order to catch my breath.

@JoJoGirl: Hahaha! At the end of our workout on Wednesday we did a max overhead hold of a plate and I won. The others in my class complained that it wasn't fair because I had the baby helping me ;)

@hergreenapples: You are right about taking breaks - it has been hard for the competitive side of me to take it easy, but I have been really good about taking breaks between rounds on some of the tougher/longer metcons and just making sure I get my breath and get some water.

@jojogirl: I think that is a pretty darn good excuse!! :)

@hergreenapples, I just read a really, really awesome book on exercising while pregnant. And I know there's always concern that working out hard will deprive the baby of oxygen...the book stated that the placentas of women who exercised had a LOT more blood vessels than women who don't exercise. So unless you are really going balls to the wall, your baby still gets lots of oxygen because your body has adapted for it.

I thought that was amazing :P

I'm 21 weeks pregnant and have been crossfitting since March of this year. I took about six weeks off in the first tri when the fatigue was just too overwhelming to even walk around the block let alone bust out a WOD!

I've lowered my weights considerably and am mostly using DBs for any overhead work - although I guess I just kind of play it by ear, as I did push presses earlier this week using the bar. I've been deadlifting with the bar until now, but am thinking of switching to a heavy KB (based on advice from crossfitmom.com) to limit the pressure on my uterus. Weighted step-ups instead of box jumps. Anytime we do any ab work (rarely) I've either done plank variations or knees to elbows. I've had to start going to my knees for push-ups, because I feel otherwise it's putting too much pressure on my stomach. For burpees, my coaches have had to do an air squat then jump to plank and jump back to standing.

That stuff has all been pretty intuitive, but I think the hardest thing for me has been remembering to take breaks when we're doing conditioning. I try to follow the talk test rule. I remember reading somewhere (probably on crossfitmom) that the baby doesn't get oxygen until after you get oxygen and that is definitely helpful to keep in mind when you feel yourself getting caught up in the competition of a WOD. Do not pay attention to the clock!

I was bemoaning this morning to the one person at my box who does know i"m pregnant that we had JUST done 1RMs for I think snatches two weeks ago, and I was struggling with the same weight today. She said "well, you have something growing inside you..". I was like NO!! That does not count. No excuses. :)

@Sammyfab: Impressive with the muscle ups, pregnant or not! That is one movement that I think will elude me forever.

@Lozza: @JoJoGirl: @tlcbaby: Ditto what the others have said, now that most people know I'm pregnant, they're usually pretty impressed that I'm showing up at all, and especially that I made it in semi-regularly in the first trimester. I don't feel too badly about taking my time. My strength numbers on the other hand....

I'm on a nice 3-4 day a week schedule now and it feels pretty good.

Aww...thanks ladies! I've been crossfitting for 4 years as of this January (although I've barely worked out since LO was born) so I've been at it for awhile!

I'm a small girl with good body awareness so the gymnastics skills and oly liftingcome a bit easier to me. The strength stuff though? Not so much :).

I think any pregnant woman (or any person in general) is a champ for crossfitting!

@Sammyfab: Hot damn, girl, you are my hero!

I modified a lot of stuff. I actually didn't stop doing burpees or situps till about 20 weeks, but I found that I got really nervous about my grip- I was dropping stuff all the time outside CF, and so I stopped doing kipping pullups and did strict pullups with a band instead since I was scared of losing my grip and falling, and I used a really light kettlebell for swings. I also took breaks whenever I needed to, which was sometimes not that often, and sometimes very frequently depending on how I was feeling that day. That's why I was glad I told people at the gym pretty much right away... I didn't want people bugging me to go all out when my goal was really just to get through the workout no matter how or how long it took.

I don't do crossfit, but I do classes that are crossfit-like. I had to take basically the whole first tri off (my dr. wanted me to) so once I started back up I stopped all box jumps, weighted jump squats, full sit-ups, and obv. anything laying on my belly or twisting. I'm 29 weeks this week and still do presses, cleans, jump squats if I'm not feeling ligament pains, pushups, TRX work etc. As long as I feel comfortable I do it - if I have any pause I just ask for a modification but I still feel like I get great workouts. I've had a couple of weeks where I had some major belly growth that were tougher that others but I just did what I could.

I'm a crazy person and I didn't modify much right away. I stopped doing GHD sit ups right away; I couldn't do muscle ups after 18 weeks and i scaled chest to bar pullups to regular ones around then (mainly because I hate C2B). I did up downs instead of burpees once my belly popped around 5-ish months. I lifted continuously until the very end (cleans, snatches, squats) but with longer breaks in between sets. Oh, and sometimes I would modify the # of rounds in the wod or take a full round off if it was a 3 minutes on/1 minute off type of wod.

I pretty much modified what the other posters have already said. Another thing I modified was jumping rope. That just didn't feel comfortable for me at a certain point. My coach told me to do lunges instead. At around 22 weeks my OB told me I could no longer do any weighted squats and stick to air squats. This is because I am pregnant with twins. At 25 weeks I had to quit Crossfit all together. It was just becoming too much for my body. I miss it though!

I'm 14w5d and the only thing I have modified is doing thrusters instead of burpees (ie i stay on my hands with elbows locked and thrust out with my feet, but no push up) and box jumps i quit in WODs because it spiked my HR too high. I do everything else though. I did overhead squats yesterday and it was really pulling on my round ligament so will probably back off the overhead weight stuff soon like snatches. You've seen crossfitmom.com, right?

Well i stopped doing box jumps and burpees right away. All that up/down jumping motion made me feel sick and lightheaded. I hated them! I did step ups instead. I got out of breath so easily, I didn't mind. I also stopped doing sit ups right away and transitioned to planks. I couldn't do toes to bar or anything like that anyways, but I mostly do L-sits with them instead of bringing my feet all the way up. Sometimes i do air squats instead of burpees if there isn't a box nearby. I do these little pregnant burpees on them. Not real hard, but they do get your heart rate going.

I'm now 22 weeks and I am just now feeling uncomfortable doing overhead squat snatches. I felt a little wobbly even with only 65 pounds on, so I will probably not do overhead squats anymore. If i do them, it will be with a bar only. I'm getting close to having to do deadlifts and any snatches from the floor from a block, too. I'm just getting to the point where I can't comfortably bend all the way over without my stomach hurting, so they'll be propped up soon.

Any time the WOD includes sit ups or v-ups, I do planks. I started out with push ups on a bar and now i do them on my knees. My stomach hits the floor now, so I may have to modify that soon, somehow. I use a thicker band for pull ups, now that I weigh more...

There's not a ton i find that i have to modify. I take breaks during the warm up, which ALWAYS wears me out more! and if we're doing long distance stuff--run to the end of the gym, bear crawl back, etc, I only go half or 3/4 distance. But most of the time, I can do everything in the WOD. My endurance has tanked quite a bit so i tire out easily, but I find that my strength has not and I've been able to continue lifting over 100 pounds without excess straining. I'm going to have to start taking some weight off now that i can't keep the bar as close to my stomach, though.

Commenting to follow this thread, even though I am 13 weeks also so I don't think I have any more information than you! The only thing I have modified so far is not doing full burpees to where I'm flat on the ground - just going into a plank. Plus using lighter weights where it feels appropriate.

One of our coaches did CF through her whole pregnancy and she said she switched to step ups pretty early because her balance felt off, but that it was likely a personal thing, because some people do them well into the second tri.

So I am currently 13 weeks pregnant and the other night we were doing box jumps. For some reason, I was afraid to do them. I had this fear of falling and hitting my stomach on the box. So I just did step ups.

Were there any exercises you modified because you just weren't comfortable doing them while pregnant?
