@Mrs. Jump Rope: Ours did too; it really does work. Snowy air is probably fantastic for alleviating the nastiest croup symptom: airway restriction, which can lead to stridor. Cold, moist air is good! (Hot, steamy showers are second best.) I'd take her out frequently if you can. I'm sending healthy wishes your way!

@sandy: I'm so sorry your LO was so sick! :(

@honeybear: the ped suggested cold air! I let her play in the snow for all of 5 minutes this morning.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: You did the right thing! The virus is spread via air, through an infected child's cough or sneeze. It seems that the second day of croup is usually the worst. :( I hope she feels better soon! If it's cooler outside where you are, take her for a drive with the windows down to open up her airway (counterintuitive, but it works!).

@sandy: We had a similar experience. Croup can be just an inconvenience but it can also be brutal. We got the horrible, long-lasting strain, and all of us got it. We're rarely ill, but that one took us out.

Thanks guys! I did keep her home today. The cough was very noticeable this morning!

Lots of TLC for her!

I would keep her home. She may be past her most contagious stage (usually before the bark starts) but they are usually really tired and rest will help her get better soon.

Hope she gets better soon!

I would keep her home. My LO just had croup in September when she was 22 months and she ended up in the ER bc she developed stridor...she had to get the breathing treatment, an IM shot and x-rays. It was awful. She is usually the healthiest, strongest baby and shakes off colds/illnesses like it's not big deal but the croup just kicked her butt. Her two little friends had it without issue so every kid is affected differently

I kept DS home for two days but he also had a fever. If it was just the cough and it wasn't too bad I might have sent him. My only worry would be nap time. I wouldn't want him to keep other kids awake if he started coughing.

@littlek: she is completely herself, attitude wise. She hasn't been the best sleeper or eater though.

We had her at the ped last week for another cold turned sinus infection so she's been on antibiotics. She's had a cough but it turned barky this morning.

They did give her oral steroids in office!

We kept LO out of daycare for a day with croup. He had a bad cough, but was otherwise happy. Since he's over a year old, he got some oral steroids which really helped it along.

@mrbee: one child had been out of her class for a week with croup! I'm going to google the incubation period.. She was exposed to him two weeks ago but only exhibited symptoms today.

She's also been on an antibiotic for the last week, too! Play date mom knew about that -- her child had an ear infection!

The joys of preschool...

@Mrs. Jump Rope: Would definitely notify the play date parent!

Croup just went around our daycare, and we were one of the few parents to notify! They weren't too worried, since everyone else already seemed to have it... has it swept through your daycare yet?

I checked our preschool handbook and croup isn't listed as an illness! They discuss rashes, flu and chickenpox but nothing else! Is this something we should notify the school about? You don't have to call out for sicknesses, though..

Should I also notify the mom we had a play date with last week? C had had a cough for about a week, but this morning was the only time it sounded barky. I bet this had a lot to do with her poor sleeping lately!

Talk to me about croup... DH took Chloe to the pediatrician this morning and it's croup!

They said as long as she doesn't have a fever it's ok to go to preschool. Would you keep her home anyway?
