@Bao: keeping the room cool with a cool
Mist humidifier and Vicks! My lo got it and we did end up calling 911 and a ride to the ER before we knew what he had. His wheezing and croup improved carrying him from the house to the ambulance. The cold air thing works!!! Just wrap them in a blanket and stand outside letting them breath in the cold air. My lo improved with a steroid & breathing treatment but it was a rough night and very expensive nontheless. It's scary stuff!

I would call your doc. The thing with croup is it often gets worse at night, and you want to give yourself the best shot at not spending a night in the ER. In any event, you should definitely find out what stridor looks/sounds like, and be ready to go to the ER if you see it. I'm sorry, croup totally sucks.

Thanks everyone, I have followed your tips! LO1 now has it, so I've got two sick/grumpy kids.

LO had croup 3 times too and I think the first started right before her second bday. She was given oral steroids you take for 3 days. It does get worse and night and naps bc they are lying down. The dr did say that it does sound worse than it actually is. Also, if you get croup, unfortunately you have a high chance of getting it again. If it doesn't die down after a couple of days, I would take her to the peds for the medicine

We've just gone through this with LO, we ended up visiting A&E 3 times for steroids as he had a pretty severe case. The hospital docs told us to keep him dosed up with ibuprofen even if he didn't seem in pain, as it helps reduce the swelling in the throat. I think most cases are pretty mild but keep an eye on her breathing and watch for stridor (our doc showed me a YouTube video so I could tell what I was looking for).

We had the kids sleep in a stroller... it helped so much to have them not lying down, along with opening the window for the cold air!

We drove around with the windows down for a short while and bundled DS up, obviously, when he had it. It helped. Steroid shot is what helped the most.

When we had croup we ended up with a steroid shot which worked miraculously fast. Fingers crossed yours clears up without needing anything!

I think 2 is the age where it's ok to use so I'm sure shes fine. something about the menthol irritating their nasal passages when they are small and causing more mucus. but I'm sure it's nothing to worry about.

@Mrs. Lion: ugh, really?! She's 21 months. She has a stuffy nose so figured it would help her breathe but maybe I should wipe it off? @mossyslane: I've never dealt with it, it's no fun. Thanks for the tips!

Ugg, so sorry--my daughter has had croup three times and the nightimes are the worst--going out into cool air helps if things get bad at night, and just staying upright for as long as possible. Each time we've ended up going to the pediatrician after a bad night to get an oral steroid that helped her to breathe easier the next night. That was very helpful

if it gets bad again cold air helps...so taking her outside can help calm her down if she gets worked up. how old is she? I've heard in really little ones Vicks can make it worse, but I'm not positive.

I think LO2 has croup. She's fine most of the day but gets episodes of coughing that sound like a bark and sort of gags/gasps for air. She's sleeping fine now, I have the humidifier going and put Vicks on her, is there anything else I could do for her?
