@hilsy85: it's already gotten worse, so I'm definitely not looking forward to tonight :( finally got her to nap though! I elevated her mattress and have the humidifier on. Dan is getting some Zarbee's on the way home from work too.

We didn't go to the doc, but spoke with the nurse. She said what other posters suggested - a blast of cold air (even the freezer will do). She also said some babies respond better to a hot steamy bathroom. We also elevated his crib using tuna cans under one end (not too high so he didn't wiggle down to the bottom). Hope LO feels better soon!!

Thanks everyone! The barking cough is so scary. It's caused her to spit up mucus a couple times, which wasn't fun. I took her outside for a minute, and that seemed to help with the wheezing. We're all set up on the couch with blankets, movies, and stuffed animals, so hopefully a couple days of rest will kick this in the butt.

@hilsy85: I listened to a child with stridor on YouTube, and it's definitely not that bad, thank God! Thanks though -- now I know what to listen out for!

My older son (4) is prone to croup. It's usually worse at night, sitting with him in the steamy bathroom with the shower going definitely helps or the cool, night air. One time I put him in the carseat and drove around with the windows cracked open, it really helped. I've taken him in once, it was when the strider got bad during the day and I feared it would get even worse overnight. He was given a steroid injection and was so much better. The physician we saw explained to us that it is a viral illness and that my son would get better on his own but the steroid helps to acutely relieve the upper-airway inflammation. I would try the steam/cold air first and if that doesn't help I would have her seen.

I'd take LO to the doctor anyway. The last time he developed something similar, it wasn't croup, but he was struggling to breathe. They put him on a nebulizer with albuterol which really helped him.

I had taken J to the ER per the triage nurse's direction and I wish I hadn't. As soon as I took him into the cold air outside, his airways opened up and he was breathing fine. All they did was say he has croup, there's nothing we can do, he can have steroids if he's having trouble breathing- but he wasn't- and sent us on our way. We paid a lot for nothing.
It ran it's course and he was fine.

I would only be concerned if she is having trouble breathing.

We took her to the dr because we didn't know what it was....she wasn't prescribed anything. Just warm mists, some cool air outside, and some advil to help alleviate any discomfort. Said it gets worse before it gets better

We took C to the doctor for croup the first time she had it, but we also didn't know it was croup. The barky cough was kind of scary and she was small, not even 2 yet!

Now we treat at home and listen for difficulty breathing. The cold air actually helps, so you might consider letting her play outside for 5-10 minutes! We used to say goodnight to mr. moon every night before bed just so she'd get that blast of cool air, and would run the humidifier in her room.

We saw the ped because she had a fever (and I didn't realize it was croup!). He prescribed an oral steroid for her. I don't think the steroid was necessary, but it helped with her breathing. The only other things he recommended were a humidifier and elevating her crib mattress. Hope S feels better soon!

I think the only reason to see a doctor is if she starts to have difficulty breathing (I would google stridor and listen to an audio clip so you know what to listen for). In that case they give steroids. Otherwise, it just takes time. Cold air helps, so maybe stand her in front of the fridge or take her out for a little bit.

I am pretty sure Sadie has croup. She had a barking cough and a little wheeze last evening and woke up coughing several times last night/this morning. No significant fever. I know it's viral, so I'm wondering if this is something that we should just treat at home. Or do she need to see a doc? It snowed a foot last night and my husband has the SUV at work, so I'm nervous! I'm not sure if I could actually get to the doctor. Anyone with experience?

ETA: I used Vick's and the humidifier last night, but they didn't seem to make much difference
