I think 4 weeks seems a bit young, but my SIL used Babywise with my niece and nephew and it worked for her... she started at 6-8 weeks. They aren't scarred for life :) I'm on the fence over how I will sleep-train my LO.

@Lozza: This is crucial, the distinction between crying and fussing. I would never ignore an actual cry from my child, but fussing is far different. I felt confident differentiating between these two very early, but that's a comfort issue.

I don't think I could listen to my baby full on cry for more than 1 minute at this point (he's 3.5 weeks), and the only time that happens is when I'm in the bathroom and he's in his crib or bassinet. If he's just fussing or grunting, i'll let him go for a few minutes. 4 weeks is just way too young for CIO though--the only thing that teaches them is that when they're sad/scared/hungry, their needs get ignored.

With LO, I went in and picked him up more or less every time he fussed until he was 7 month old, and then, while we didn't do a strict CIO, we started waiting longer periods to see if LO was going to self-soothe and get back to sleep (which happened just fine most of the time within a few minutes) or whether he was actually freaking out and needing attention from us.
I think with LO #2, I'll have a better idea of the distinction between "crying" and "fussing." I didn't really get a handle on that for LO till he was older. And while I honestly can't remember what was going on at 4 weeks old, and imagine that I probably wouldn't do anything differently at that age for LO#2, I do think that I would start a lot earlier with the "wait a few moments and see if LO is calming down or getting more worked up," because I think there were a lot of times when LO would have done fine if left alone, but I swooped in the minute he uttered a peep and picked him up. But yeah, I don't think that was at 4 weeks- more like 4 months.

I agree that you shouldn't pick then up immediately but I'm think CIO that young is too young.
I run to my baby when he cries (he's 4w exactly) and I talk to him, rub his belly, give him his paci...this all takes less than 1 minute. If it doesn't work I pick him up....3-4mins is a long time to hear that newborn scream:/

I am very opposed to crying it out in general. I think doing it at four weeks is just tragic. I would differentiate between crying and fussing, though. From the start, I didn't respond to every tiny fuss that my baby made. If she was just grinching a little, I'd let it go, and she'd often just cool it and go back to sleep or whatever. At 14 months, she'll still wake up at times and say MAMA!, and then go right back to sleep. If she cries in the night, we always wait 30 seconds to make sure she's really up and not already fallen back to sleep.

That seems awfully young to me, but I think it also depends on the cry. If its a real "I need something" cry - I wouldn't let a 4 week old go for 5 minutes crying. If its just a "meh, I'd rather be held by you than put down where it isn't so warm and cozy" cry; then I might let them fuss for a few minutes at that age.

I have a 4 week old and couldn't imagine letting him cry for 3-5 minutes. I hate to hear him cry for a second. At that age they are crying b/c they need something and tending to their needs quickly makes them feel secure.

@Maysprout: I agree. 3-5 minutes of fussing or light crying is what you would do with a baby that young. You wouldn't let them hysterically cry or anything.

I never did CIO with LO. But I did let her fuss for a bit and give her calm reassurance when I wanted her to get used to something and it usually worked pretty well. I think 3 minute fussing or crying is different than CIO.

Babywise is mostly controversial because of the idea of feeding a newborn on a strict schedule.

I do think 4 weeks is young but I've read about plenty of people who did it with success. http://www.babywisemom.com/2007/11/should-you-do-cio.html

(Typical disclaimer that I am baby obsessed and thus research these things even though I am not pregnant or even TTC. Thanks for humoring me.)

I've heard a lot of good things about Moms On Call on the Internets, so I decided to putz around online and learn more about it, out of curiosity. It was especially interesting to me that they seem to promote CIO (cry it out) from basically the very beginning. Even CIO proponents like Ferber usually say to wait until your baby is 3-4 months old, hitting certain developmental milestones, etc. before you let them cry.

From what I could gather (I haven't read their book or done their online seminars) they say that starting at 4 weeks, you should put your LO down sleepy but awake and let them cry for 3-5 minutes. Then, soothe them but don't pick them up.

I am all about putting our babies on schedules when we have them, and even though some aspects of attachment parenting appeal to me, I'm not opposed to CIO. Still, this seems very young, and reminds me of Babywise, which is very controversial. What do you all think? Any of you do this?
