Well, I have two experiences because my girls are so opposite.

If DD1 was overtired or overstimulated, then she would just scream for an hour while we did 4 of the 5 S's with her (swaddle, side-lying, shushing and swaying) + a little bounce. In order for her to calm down, she just needed to cry (but she also needed to know we were there). At 3.5 yrs old, she still has trouble falling asleep if there's been a lot going on, but at least we can talk about it and help her to learn to do it on her own.

DD2 cannot cry it out because she gets SO worked up that it has the opposite affect on her. Instead, we will keep the same routine (read a book, turn on the music, sway for a min and then put her in the crib). We will sit in the rocker until she falls asleep (anywhere from 2-30 min). But, now that she is 18 months old, we are having a much easier time leaving after we put her in her crib.

Sometimes, I just think kids have to get some emotions out and for babies, that means crying. Hell, even my toddler does that and I just figure she's processing SOMETHING.

Oh, that sucks. Just to let you know you aren't alone, my LO cried herself to sleep for all naps and some bedtimes until she was 15 months or so. So did her cousin. In our case though it was usually only 10 min of crying.

Dd is 7 months old and has always resisted sleeping - right now she is in her crib crying and has been steadily for 30 min. She probably does this about twice a week. We watch for sleep signs and do the same routine, but sometimes she cries non-stop for 45-60 min until she passes out. Going in to check on her / pat her back definitely makes it worse and prolongs the crying, so we usually let her cry.

My question is - how often do/did other babies cry like that? I thought once we did sleep training / CIO we wouldn't have to keep having her cry multiple times a week.
