Coming back to update this again. My rope basket developed its first hole and I was able to sew it shut easily. For durable kid stuff storage that is repairable and won't scrape up your furniture or walls and can weather whatever the kids throw at it, I officially love a good rope basket.

I forgot to come back and update this. I wound up getting the H&M basket. It fits really well in the Ikea Kallax (although when it's full it kind of has to be shoved in) and has held up to kids carrying it around the house and laying on it for a few months. It's really nice for our douplos which fill it to the brim. I bought another one in another color because they've expanded their options. I'll probably keep buying one at a time every time I get a coupon until I've replaced all my fabric boxes.

For anyone who doesn't want more plastic in their house, I'd definitely recommend the H&M rope baskets.

I have a combo of fabric ones from IKEA and Walmart that are the right size and cheap enough to just replace when they get icky.
In my upstairs smaller one I have the striped tote storage bin thing from formerly land of nod (crate and barrel now?)

Target also makes the plastic Y-Weave baskets that have been linked a few times above in a 13" size which should fit the Ikea Kallax better, but they are still slightly tapered at the bottom so if that's annoying to you it could be a deal breaker.
https://www.target.com/p/y-weave-13-cube/-/A-53816424?preselect=52855391#lnk=sametab

They also come in a variety of colors which might be nice.

We have several of the 11" white ones for a non-ikea cube storage in our nursery and they seem very sturdy, but aren't in use just yet. Gald to hear from the above they hold up well. Plus I like plastic for kid things so they can get beaten up and scrubbed down as needed while still looking like they're in good shape.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I find it interesting that everyone uses plastic as an alternate. @mediagirl: those Ikea ones look reasonable. I already have tons of white stuff in my house that I struggle to keep clean.

@Miss Ariel: here is how they look in the shelf. You lose a bit of usable storage space but they have been easy for DD to take out and use.

@brownepiano: Fabric but mine are from target and cheap enough that you could replace them every year if you had to. My son does the same as your LOs and we haven’t had to replace them yet (the boxes are 1.5 years old).

100% either the Target Y Weave ones or the sturdier ones from Ikea itself. I kind of prefer Ikea because it fits the cube to the T.

Another vote for the Target y-weave baskets. I got a variety of sizes for a non-cube kid shelf and they work great because the kids can actually see what is in them without pulling them down, but at a glance its clean and unified. After I bought them I noticed my son's daycare had a bunch of them and I was like "oh cool, I just bought some of these, but I didn't see that color you have, it's nice" and they were like "yeah well these are 10 years old so..." and they looked just as new as mine!

We have these - absolutely no complaints. My son sits in them, stands on them, etc. and he's almost 40 lbs. Haven't noticed them scratching the shelf - but you could always stick felt furniture pads on them if you were concerned.

Ikea has several options for sturdier baskets that fit into their square shelving units.

We have these, but they're scratch and I don't know if I'd want my kids digging in them all the time.
https://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20110540/

But some of these others look promising:

We have some of these in our kallax shelf - they are a bit smaller than the standard fabric ones but I like that they are plastic.

https://www.target.com/p/y-weave-basket-bin-11-room-essentials-153/-/A-52672525

We also have some that I can't find on Target's website that are half the height and have a lid, we can fit two stacked per square for things that have less pieces.

Anyone use alternatives to the fabric boxes for your cube shelf?

I have one of those BIG Ikea Kallax (the 16 cube one) and love it for toy storage. We have kids books, board games, and most of our toys stored in it. I got 8 of those fabric covered cardboard boxes for the bottom two rows. The lowest row has collections of things (duplos, trains, balls, misc little vehicles) and the kids are slowly destroying those. They pull them out and lay half in them while digging for the specific thing they want. The level of fabric boxes above them are fine because they are mostly things they have to ask to get out so the boxes stay put in the shelf 90% if the time.

DH thinks we should just wait a few years and get a new set of the same boxes and assume they won't have to practically lay in them to find what they want (right now they are 2 and 4). I want to find an alternative.

So, have you tried anything else? I don't want wood or metal that will scratch up the shelf. I was thinking rope basket, canvas basket, wicker basket... something along those lines.

These are some of the ones I have found. They are expensive to buy 4 without knowing if they will hold up any longer than the existing boxes.

http://a.co/d/7TOpRTF
